  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Still Immature

... I want you to know how much I am struggling for you….. (Colossians 2:1)

Paul was in chains when he wrote this letter. What could a man do in chains? Especially a poor chained man? He poured out his heart for them before the Lord. He prayed for them day and night. His longing for them was so intense that his spirit was with them.

For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit. (2:5)

He truly loved them with the love that can only be expressed in pure spiritual words; too pure and too spiritual for me to understand. Of all the letters, the Colossians is the most difficult to me. In other letters, Paul wrote about his affection in such a manner that I could feel his compassion. But the Colossians is different. The words are not of milk but of solid food.

But solid food is for the mature …. (Hebrews 5:14)

This passage summarizes whee I am now. I have a long journey ahead to reach this maturity.

Lord Jesus,
I confess that I am immature. Words of solid food I am not yet ready for. My lack of obedience and lack of affection for my brothers are holding me back from reaching the maturity. Help me and instill in me a diligence to keep your words.

Lord,
Help me understand this letter and participate in Paul’s longing for the Colossian brothers, for he is still with me through the Holy Spirit although his body is absent. Amen.

He is the image of invisible God, the firstborn of all creation...

and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things.... (Colossians 1:15, 20)

I am reading the words that came from the heart of my apostle Paul. The words come to my head easy but not to my heart. I can read the whole book in one dash as if it were a doctrinal book. I can even memorize several verses to make my point in Christian debates. But what good will it do to my spirit unless the words change my heart?

Brothers and sisters, please pray for me so that my heart will become tender and receive these words from Paul's heart. Thank you.

Lord,
Let these blessed words transform my scarred and hardened heart into a tender one. Amen.

So many people don't realize what you are starting to understand here. God is leading you in to greater maturity. I will pray that you remember to ask God in every thing. The more you rely on Him and nurture His life in you, the more you are mature (i.e. complete)

Thank you, brothers and sisters for praying for me. Thanks to your prayers, finally the Colossians started to come to my heart. It's been a long wait. I spent (wasted) much time in disappointment and frustration. The Lord had mercy on me and allowed me to know him.

You have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ who is your life is revealed,
then you also will be revealed with him in glory. (Colossians 3:3-4)

This doesn’t sound like a talk between two living human beings. Though their body depends on bread and water, they speak as if they were out of body. Their mind is solely set on what Christ will bring on his return.

This is a true spiritual fellowship between two spiritual beings. Into this fellowship Paul invites me: Brother Rupert, shed your earthly desires and join our spiritual fellowship.

Lord,
I yearn to join Paul’s fellowship with the Colossian brothers. Help me leave my earthly entanglement behind, and have the mind of the Colossian brothers. Amen
