... I want you to know how much I am struggling for you
.. (Colossians 2:1)
Paul was in chains when he wrote this letter. What could a man do in chains? Especially a poor chained man? He poured out his heart for them before the Lord. He prayed for them day and night. His longing for them was so intense that his spirit was with them.
For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit. (2:5)
He truly loved them with the love that can only be expressed in pure spiritual words; too pure and too spiritual for me to understand. Of all the letters, the Colossians is the most difficult to me. In other letters, Paul wrote about his affection in such a manner that I could feel his compassion. But the Colossians is different. The words are not of milk but of solid food.
But solid food is for the mature . (Hebrews 5:14)
This passage summarizes whee I am now. I have a long journey ahead to reach this maturity.
Lord Jesus,
I confess that I am immature. Words of solid food I am not yet ready for. My lack of obedience and lack of affection for my brothers are holding me back from reaching the maturity. Help me and instill in me a diligence to keep your words.
Lord,
Help me understand this letter and participate in Pauls longing for the Colossian brothers, for he is still with me through the Holy Spirit although his body is absent. Amen.
