• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've had trouble sleeping off and on for several years. Over the counter sleep aids do not work well for me. They will put me to sleep but I will usually feel awful the next day. I found a web-site with info on Magnesium. People that have a Magnesium deficiency usually have trouble sleeping. I started taking Magnesium supplements and they seem to be helping. It might be worth looking in to.

I've a dickens of a time getting to sleep. Never up quite that late, or else I'd die in the morning :p but it takes me a good three hours lying in bed awake sometimes for me to fall asleep. The worst bit is that I'm on an antidepressant that doesn't allow me to take stuff like Benadryl to help sleep. Grr.

 Hope you slept well eventually.

Benadryl is for allergies and such too, but it knocks me out when I have it :p so I used to use it as a sleep med. Not too often, just once in awhile when I was really stressed out and couldn't get to sleep on my own and needed a little push. I guess I could use Tylenol PM now ... hmmm ...

Yea I suffer from alittle insomnia every now and then, I usually cant sleep because I keep thinking about things, my mind wont stop being active and negative..I hate it sometimes. So I end up doing things to keep my mind busy and focused until I forget about the one thought that would of kept me up all night.

I also have insomnia. I take medication for it the doctor gave me, but it is very very mild. I told him sometimes it doesn't work and he said I could take benedyrl with it once in a while. That does help me.

Benedryl is the ingrediant in a lot of the tylenol or advil PM's on the market that is what gave me the idea.

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) reduces sleep quality, I'd suggest melatonin instead (preferrably the time released stuff). Take it at 10:30pm or so such that it helps your body's natural sleep cycle the most. But, diphenhydramine is better than not sleeping. Valerian root, l-theanine, and chamomille tea all enhance sleep quality/duration and don't form a physical dependance/tolerance.

Some other things you can do...
- very dark/quiet
- white noise (fans, etc)
- comfortable bed / pillows
- slightly cool temp
- less constrictive clothing
- sleep on side
- regular sleep/wake schedule
- no caffeine after 6pm (or better yet noon, or better yet not at all... scientific studies show a single cup of coffee disrupting sleep later that night.)
- no energetic/stressful activity about 1-2h before bed. In one study, computer use with bright monitors disrupted sleep in this time period.
- relaxed breathing / prayer / meditation to relax and unwind before sleep (stress makes you feel alert and suppresses melatonin production)
- use your bedroom for only sleeping if possible
- no pets in bed/bedroom if possible as they tend to disrupt sleep
