What is the significance of the stigmata? About 27 years ago I had an amazing experience. I was sitting on my balcony playing the guitar (badly, lol) I felt the presence of Jesus slowly coming down in the sky. He radiated a form of oval shaped power that surrounded him for about eighty feet. I could not see this, but could feel it. I looked down at my hands and they had blood stains on them, I looked back at the sky and the sensations of Jesus presence was gone. I then looked at my hands and they were clean. Amazing experience. But I still don't fully understand it's meaning . Any ideas welcomed. I am a member of the church of Christ here in Perth. Great church , good people

Riley nailed it, it's considered a mark of extreme holiness. In the sense that the person may be suffering quite closely with Christ on the cross.

One notable Saint to have experienced that is Padre Pio, AKA Pio of PIetrelcina. Might be worth reading about to maybe gain a better understanding of stigmata itself.

As well as many female Saints such as St. Gemma Galgani, St. Rita of Cascia, St. Catherine of Siena.

One modern day stigmatic is an Eastern Catholic from Syria named Myrna Nazzour.
