I avoid music that has sinful references; idk why that makes me full of myself.

I used to love Metal and Rock, but when I fully gave my life to God I found out that what you listen to can really affect how you act and what you say. I only listen to Christian Metal now, because it's the same style as before, but the lyrics are a lot more uplifting than all the depressing lyrics of the past bands. So, yes I agree with you here.

Any Christian with a desire to listen to secular music needs to pray about this problem. If you have a Savior that died on a cross for you, why would you want to listen to something that doesn't glorify Him? The Bible says in all things you do, glorify God. Music is a creation of God that man has taken and twisted and perverted to satisfy himself. Listening to and enjoying secular music is clearly rejoicing in what this world has to offer and not what God has for us.

God deserves our praise, our time, everything, including our music. I'm not saying I'm better than anyone for not wanting to listen to secular music, I'm just saying that God demands holiness from people, a.k.a separation from the world. Love NOT the world, nor the things that are in the world, for if any man loveth the world the love of the Father is not in Him.

Secular music does not please God.

And that's why I even watch some of the "Christian" bands I listen to. Sometimes a band says they're "Christians in a band" but don't have anything glorifying God in their music at all.

I know I may meet with disagreement from some here, but I actually think some mainstream music is okay... as long as there is a positive, wholesome message to be found. Granted, I believe a lot of secular music is garbage, especially that which promotes immorality and everything else that is against the Bible. But I have actually found that there is a fair amount that actually leans toward being inspirational, or at least extremely wholesome. I would liken this to watching a non-Christian but moral programming on TV (such as The Brady Bunch, I Love Lucy, Little House on the Prairie, or a Shirley Temple movie). This can also go for reading books/magazines that aren't necessarily Christian but educational and moral in nature. If that is one's conviction to listen only to Christian music, read only Christian books, or watch only Christian movies (if they watch any TV at all), that is what they should do. But we should all respect one another despite our differing convictions... not only when it comes to this, but other issues, as well. See Romans 14.

Below are a few links with some great insight on this issue, from a Christian point of view:

Secular music simply means music that isn't used for religious purposes. Church music is chanted/sung during Liturgy and expresses important theology and reverence towards God.

In fact- what allegedly passes for church music in too many churches these days is so irreverent and bordering on/is blasphemy- that a lot of secular music is much better and more uplifting to listen to in comparison. Some secular music is anti-Christian in nature but a lot of it isn't. Christians are certainly able to/allowed to listen to secular music.

Example- this is sexualized CRAP that passes for church music in some places. I call it blasphemy. I'd take your run of the mill secular song any day over this.

Jesus I need to know true love
Deeper than the love found on earth
Take me into the King’s chamber
Cause my love to mature

Let me know the kisses of Your mouth
Let me feel Your warm embrace
Let me smell the fragrance of Your touch
Let me see Your lovely face
Take me away with You
Even so, Lord, come
I love You Lord
I love You more than life

My heart, my flesh yearn for You, Lord
To love You is all I can do
You have become my sole passion
Cause my love to be true

^The above is a perfect example of why I can't do certain churches anymore.

This is an example of church music (seriously- once you've seen the difference you can't go back):

And if I had to choose to listen to one of those Jesus is my boyfriend songs or a song like this- I'll take this secular song:

Secular means not religious, yes. Another word for secular? Worldly. A Christian has no interest in worldly things. No interest in secular (worldly) music.

My God tells me not to love the things that are in the world, my God tells me to be holy because He is holy (holy = separate from the world).

If someone is truly trying to debate/argue why they should be able to listen to secular music, that person needs to check their love for God, why would any Christian want to listen to music that does not support the Gospel, the love of God, etc? He died for us so we may live for Him, when we accepted Him as Savior the Bible says we change in every manner of living!
