Step-parent adoptions

I was just wondering if anyone has ever attempted a step-parent adoption out there, what the process consists of, how long it takes, cost, and if anyone's had any success with petitioning to adopt your spouse's child..

My wife and I just recently married in january and we were looking at options in case the biological father backs out and since he pays no child support, if i would be able to adopt her without his consent. anyone ever been through a similar situation?

The process is probably different for each state, as each state has its own laws. My nephew adopted his step-son 3 or 4 years ago. The main thing I remember is that the boy's biological father had to sign Termination of Parental Rights papers. I would suggest you contact an attorney who has done adoption cases. I don't think it's real expensive, mainly attorney fees, court costs, and the cost of a new birth certificate.
