I remember something a few years ago that basically said about 90% of christian men and 65% of christian women have seen porn. And around half of those amounts currently, have addictions to it in various forms. Which makes sense to me. Its an addiction like anything else and some people don't even realize they are addicted. Some may go as far as to say "I only look like once a year!".

I don't believe it is about addiction. It is about churches that can't discuss sex honestly. Evangelicals do a lot to try and manage their desires from puberty on up. Most of the time it is accomplished in a secretive and emotionally harmful way because they are taught most everything is sin. Over time, improperly used tools become a crutch.

I know a man in his 50s, raised devoutly Catholic and currently Atheist. As an adult he has had difficulty functioning with women because of the tremendous negativity surrounding sex he was raised with. At this point it appears that porn & self-service is less emotionally taxing for him.

I am sure that is a factor. My wife grew up in an environment that taught her that all sex was dirty disgusting and sinful. I had one that never mentioned it at all.

"Teachers" like Bill Gothard and Josh Harris certainly have not helped.

I think it would be down to "Bible belt" type places fostering attitudes encouraging emotional immaturity in general. Obviously, evangelical Protestantism doesn't directly cause the viewing of pornography, but it goes hand in hand with alot of stuff that robs people of personal growth.

And in my experience and the experience of people I know, people learn duplicitous behavior: they learn the dog-whistles and code words to gain social acceptance. In the Bible belt, everybody says they are a churchgoer, for instance, even when they aren't. In fact there is evidence that Americans go to church far less in numbers than what they say they do. Alot of the so-called "evangelical" swing voters for Trump don't actually go to church, for instance. They are "cultural Christians".

I think it's the forbidden fruit factor. If it's continually drummed into one's head "do not do the thing"—and this is more likely to occur in pious religious environments—one will more likely feel inclined to want to "do the thing".

It's hard to say. My first thought was that perhaps people in northern and western urban centers can just turn to prostitutes instead, and that this is less conveniently done in the states which have a higher population of evangelicals. Indeed, the article itself seems to make that point.
