As far as sydney goes, I wouldn't want to live there, way to busy but to be a tourist is a different matter, although not for shopping. Maybe to go to the zoo or catch a ferry, do things you can't do at home. Melbourne I could live in, and visiting is great, nothing like jumping on a tram and shopppppping, boy do i love those factory outlets, and the variety not your basic list of stores you get in the local Westfield.

As for spending 5 million on fireworks, for it all to go up in smoke, I can think of many ways to spent 5 million dollars. Don't see the sense in spenting a fortune on something that they could put the money to better use elsewhere.

However, I don't think anyone is exactly from Canberra. It is the sort of place you come to at some stage (usually employment related and usually not of you own choosing) and end up staying a while. Its not too bad, its pretty close to everything, Sydney is just up the road and Melbourne down the street. Its nice and quiet here.

My hubbie is Canberra born and bred, been here all 28yrs of his life, and I don't think we are going to go anywhere for awhile. Its a good city, big country town really and so close to everything. Syd, Melb, the coast and snowy mountains, pretty good really something for all seasons......

Col you are sort of right about Canberra. I for one wasn't born here, I was born in Sydney. My dad was a navy man, so you can imagine the shifting around that brings. They eventually settled 45 mins outside of Canberra and I lived there for 12 years before moving to Canberra as a nanny. (don't laugh I was a live-in nanny and it was the WORST job I have ever had) actually the house I nannied at is about 20min walk from here and I am praying every day I don't bump into the family - It was shocking.

But hey, there are good things out of it, I met hubby here and had my baby here so that's got to be good.

However I only know of 2 friends who were born and bred here. All the others ended up here, because their parents ended up here or something like that.
