The magi were able to understand the meaning of the stars and therefore to determine the birthplace of Jesus. However, modern Christians seem to shy away from astrology, despite it's role in one of the greatest events in the Christian story..
Why is this? Wey do modern Christians tend to reject astrology?
Fate and Divination are ideas which Christians reject because they are counter to a Christian understanding of the universe. There is no such thing as Fate (astrology is, at its core, a belief in Fate written in the stars); and trying to divine events by various means, whether by looking at the stars or by tossing animal bones, is regarded as vain superstition.
The magi were convinced that the appearance of a particular star signified something important, and it led them to find the Christ-Child in Bethlehem. This, of course, doesn't provide a justification for trying to read the stars. God used a literal donkey to speak at one point, but that doesn't mean one should go around trying to take advice from donkeys.
