Did you hear about the peer-reviewed study done by Stanford University that demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that face masks have absolutely zero chance of preventing the spread of Covid-19? No? It was posted on the the National Center for Biotechnological Information government website. The NCBI is a branch of the National Institute for Health, so one would think such a study would be widely reported by mainstream media and embraced by the “science-loving” folks in Big Tech.

It's published in Medical Hypotheses.

Cite note: Vainshelboim B. (2021). Facemasks in the COVID-19 era: A health hypothesis. Medical hypotheses, 146, 110411.

Medical Hypotheses - Wikipedia

It is quite explicitly not a peer-review journal. It is at best academic spitballing. And as the name and chapter headings suggest, it is quite literally hypothetical, not 'proof'.

Might be why it hasn't been taken up more widely.

It's painful how little thought goes into disproving the efficacy of masks, social distancing etc online.

Masks are very clearly an effective measure at reducing the transmission of Covid-19.

The virus isn't just flying around by itself, it's transmitted in microdroplets which are big enough to be filtered by masks

The subject or title of the thread is misleading if you read the NIH article, it doesn't say "useless."

The purpose of the article to to challenge the efficacy, and highlight the risks of prolonged mask wearing.

Also iirc the more effective combination is masks plus distance. Distance is only referred to twice in the paper, in two of the papers cited. Possible that the others go into it, I haven't checked each citation individually. But the main text of the hypothesis doesn't mention distancing at all as far as I can tell.

I posted two links that cite multiple studies, most pre-Covid, that disprove the usefulness of masks. I’m sure when they were done, there was no agenda.

Possibly because people in general are idiots and distancing is next to impossible.

It's not a study. It wasn't done by Stanford University. It's not peer reviewed.

Three falsehoods in 12 words. Aiming for some kind of record?

that demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that face masks have absolutely zero chance of preventing the spread of Covid-19?

It doesn't show this in the slightest.

If you look at the references given, and then compare with what is claimed they say, they are day and night apart. For instance, the article claims that a meta-analysis shows that N95 masks are ineffective against COVID-19. Looking up the actual analysis, it found no significant difference between N95 and surgical masks in terms of respiratory infections in surgeons - but only because the sample sizes were too small for a statistically significant result.

I did this at random with four of the references. What's claimed were totally misleading compared to the actual results or findings.

Do you ever practice source evaluation?
