Stamford man gets probation in hate-crime attack

A city man will receive probation for assaulting a Hispanic immigrant with a broomstick while shouting ethnic slurs at the victim and his friends last year on East Main Street.

Erick Sanchez, 20, of Tresser Boulevard, pleaded guilty this week to felony counts of first-degree assault and intimidation based on bigotry or bias.

The article also says, "One of the men was knocked unconscious and was released from Stamford Hospital’s intensive care unit three days after emergency room doctors closed a gash on his head with four staples."

This is an outrageous miscarriage of justice. The man belongs in jail.

You might feel differently if you had to spend 3 days in the intensive care unit at a hospital after someone beat you unconscious while yelling ethnic slurs at you. Do you think probation and no jail time is an appropriate punishment for that crime?

I didn't say it wasn't wrong, I am simply stating that "hate crime" doesn't exist, but is rather a buzzword. Yes this is still a crime and violence is wrong, but this doesn't belong on a forum where we are supposed spread Christian things, not to advance a political agenda. Also, the guy who attacked was the same race as the victim, this guy was just another idiot.

Hate crimes are part of the law at the moment (and have been for a while now). I don't agree with them either, honestly.

It's the whole idea that if you make a crime's punishment worse, you'll further deter people from committing it; but this hasn't been shown to actually work.

Edit: The dude who committed the crime assaulted them while yelling racial slurs. You don't suddenly stop become a hateful racist just because the race you hate is your own.

He was probably a legal immigrant attacking an undocumented immigrant. Christians are called to look after and protect immigrants so it is relevant.

The OP thinks that someone should get a longer sentence than probation for violently attacking someone and putting them in the ICU. I don't see what's objectionable about that, personally.

Sometimes people get probation for hate crimes, it's happened before, but I think he should serve time in prison.
