Do mainstream historians accept that St. Thomas was the first missionary to India, if not, who was?

I have not seen any evidence counter to this. My priest is from India and their tradition leads to Thomas. When the Portugueze missionaries arrived in India they found a small remnant of Christians and even at that point they claimed to be founded by St. Thomas.
