The monastery we visit is St. Leo Abbey. It was founded in 1889 and celebrated its 120th anniversary this year. The interior of the Lombard Romanesque church of the Holy Cross was renovated and looks wonderful. The abbey’s Church is known for its 11-ton crucifix based on the image on the Shroud of Turin.

For Floridians looking for deeper spirituality, a visit to the abbey to pray with the Catholic Benedictine monks is a good weekend day-trip.

Benedictines are known for their ancient ways and commitment to hospitality. And no, the monks do not take a vow of silence. They welcome both men and women visitors from any faith or no faith.

You're on the opposite side of the country to me, but it sounds very beautiful and inspiring and inviting...

It is and we sure like it. You might know the great desert monasteries such as Christ in the Desert -- which is The Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Abiquiu, New Mexico founded in 1964. They have an excellent web site, packed with good Benedictine material. They "welcome you to visit for a day, or as an overnight guest for two or more days." The monastery is 75 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
