Why did St.John the Baptist have his head cut off?

Because Herodias despised him for having condemned her as an adulteress (Matthew 14:3,4).

This is a simple question. One of the really big puzzler is how many heads were cut off from John the Baptist because there are no less than seven fully authenticated skulls of John the Baptist.

the point of this thread is not a debate about relics

there have been many prophets and not all of them had been killed

Not sure why you didn't post the entire verse, but here it is:

11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

It would seem to me the only way that one could logically conclude that Matthew is saying that John is greater than Mary is to assert that Mary is not in the kingdom of heaven. Is that what you're intending to imply?
