Indeed. I wouldn't have been on my ancestors' side during the war itself--I believe in a strong federal government, and obviously I'm very glad slavery was abolished by the war--but I'm still proud to be a multi-generational Southerner because of our unique and wonderful culture. And the food.
definitely the food...I had ancestors in the war...I also had a great grandfather who fought in WWI...he worked on a Zepplin...did I mention my moms side was German?...

It is funny how people can say one region of the country is far superior to any other region of the country when they have not spent any long periods of time in the other regions of the country. I never knew I would like California until I spent a week there last fall, and the same with the Northwoods of Wisconsin later that fall. And a week is not a long time, just enough time to find your way arround an area, but it was enough for me to say they are nice places to be. But for someone who has spent almost their entire life in one region of the country and not really any significant time anywhere else to say definitively "The South is far superior to the North (or West, or Mid-West)" strikes me as being just a tad bit arrogant and a good bit naieve.

I have a friend from Boston who calls me a redneck... I live in VA and I wasn't even born here but I take redneck over many other names...

Ehem, there ya go with your reps, Jenn! In my defense though, I did work an unreal ammount of hours last week and didn't much rep anyone. Which is quite funny, 'cuz most of the time I rep lots and lots of people and hence the name.

Several of my relatives (including two grandfathers) fought in WWII. I can't remember if any of my relatives fought in WWI, though. But my papa served during 'Nam, and my oldest known ancestor on one side was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.
I've got military in my blood. I never felt the call to military service myself, though. I don't have the stomach for it, and I can't even watch Platoon without edging towards a nervous breakdown.

I was born and raised in the South...but lived my teens and early twenties in the North. There is a distinct difference. That's all I'm gonna say. On another note....looks like Ernesto is headed my way.

Yes, Ernesto is headed this way. And it seems that only last night they were saying that NO, it wasn't a threat to Florida!!! I just cleaned all non-essential frozen foods out of the freezer and we bought things to update our first aid, propane supply, and filled the tanks of the cars.
