  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

He has written a book.. It is called On Marriage and Concupiscence.. Here is just one part of it.. It can be read online if you want..

Augustine said that the pleasure of making love is sinful, even within marriage. If husbands and wives focus on having children while they are making love, and they don't allow themselves to have any pleasure while doing it, then they are free from sin. If they make love in order to have children, and they enjoy doing it, then they commit a venial sin. And if they enjoy making love, and they don't want to have children, then they commit a sin that is as serious as adultery.

Agreed he had a very naughty past and think some things about it haunted him.

What is the real question? How can we look up to the Great African Doctor if he wrote such things or lived a sinful past?

No theologian is 100% accurate in his teachings. We need to compare what he taught with Scripture. And just because he had a terrible past doesn't mean he can't be a great teacher. We're all sinners saved by grace. It would be a problem if Augustine continued in his previous lifestyle and tried to teach about the Scriptures. That should raise some flags.

My question to this is how can this be since it was ordained by God?

Augustine had some really wacky beliefs... Some of what he wrote was also very good but he was also very dualistic in his beliefs... Soul over body and spirit over and against the flesh...

The latter belief obviously led to his views about sex and pleasure...

Augustine is BRILLIANT!! Even though I highly disagree with his view that we don't have a choice to be saved or not. Anyways that is for a different discussion.

I want to read his stuff on Genesis!....now what was this thread about.

Oh yeah....can't Augustine have his own opinion? Like so many people? What he says is not always right like Origen, Irenaeus, Clement and so on.
