Square Enix is pure evil, no second guessing now

Not by protecting copy right laws, but by not hiring these guys and continuing development.

News Article: Chrono Trigger Resurrection Update

The team has posted some impressive new screens, and even a trailer, but are forced to stop development.

The small development team behind fan game Chrono Trigger: Resurrection has posted some very disappointing news: they have received a Cease and Desist letter from Square Enix demanding they stop making their game. It seems after years of looking the other way, Square Enix has changed its policy on independently-created games honoring their own.

Perhaps it was the quality of the project that triggered this unprecedented response so far into development. Chrono Trigger Resurrection sports professional quality artwork that has further improved since its last showing. Here are a few samples of what you will now never be able to play:

The Chrono Trigger Resurrection site also has a trailer, which is currently down.

It truly is a shame the lawyers have interfered with something so promising. The team is not swayed, though, and is already planning something “new and fresh.” Our sympathies go out to everyone who worked so hard on this game, only to have to walk away:

Nathan Lazur - Project Director/Programmer
Luis Martins - Art Director / Concept / Texture / Lighting / Effect Artist
Moïse Breton - Main Character / Background Modeller / Texture / Effect Artist
David Ying - Main Character / Background Modeller / Texture Artist
Mathew Valente - Musician
Xavier Ding - Sound Designer
Michel Cadieux - Main Character Animator

Michael "TYP" says: Either someone has something up his butt, or Square Enix has suddenly decided to start a project remarkably similar for the PSP or PS2. I really thought this thing had a chance of going legit with Square Enix’s support…

Will the new project be a linear 3D remake of Super Mario Bros. 3? Not sure that could work, but hey, a plumber can hope.
AUGH!!! Give us what we want!

Argh! I was looking forward to it. Though, if there's a chance that they're remaking it themselves I'm still happy.

Why don't they just change the name to something else to avoid the copyright problem?

It will still have the exact same story, and the characters will look the same. It's not just the name that would have to be changed.

Well, as you can see, Im a Chrono series fan. ::points to screen name::

Yeah, that really stinks, the same thing happened to a DBZ Mod for Quake 3 called "Bid for Power". Funimation didnt like the idea of a small team making better games than them, so they sent them an order to stop programming it. But the BFP team quickly remade the models, so it was the same game, just not DBZ characters =/

i have been waiting on something like this for a LONG time. chrono trigger was, and still is one of the best games!
i think it was better back when they were just squaresoft, they had much better games then they do now.

Doesn't matter. Copyright controls making copies, not making money.
Thats where fair use comes in....If I start drawing pictures for people of anime characters that exist on a copyright, its fair use...If I sell them, than I am breaking copyright.

If I want to make a video game thats based on another with a small group of friends, and hope a few people will find it and play it, its fair use...
