I hired a new manager who started today. I spent the first part of the morning orienting her to her position and setting the expectations. When we were done she stood up and a great big nail (about 8 inches) fell off her lap or out of her pocket and to the floor. The sharp end of it was painted red. I asked her what it was and she said jokingly that it was her weapon. Then she mumbled something, I think, about it being a reminder about something and Easter. Since she is Baptist I assumed that it represented nails from the crucifixion.

I know it's not and "unorthodox" topic but since I am unchristian I can 't ask in a Baptist forum.

So what up with the nail?

Yea -- sounds like what you said bout her *mumbling* makes sense. There is a band called *Nine Inch Nails* , that purportedly took their name from the length of the nails used to crucify Jesus.

Never heard of this before, but given the baptist slant, I wouldn't doubt it.

maybe you should ask her. It sounds to me like it's a personal thing. It's certainly not a "baptist" thing.

It sounds to me like she is carrying a reminder that Christ died for her while she was still His enemy... and that in some ways, it was her and her sin that was nailing Him to the cross.

It reminds me of the book "Edge of Eternity", by Randy Alcorn (kind of a sci-fi/fantasy version of a big analogy to the Christian life) where people would dig all these nails out of their pockets and pour them out at Jesus's feet, perhaps symbolizing confession of sins.

Try asking her about it.

Throughout the history of Christianity, many have found it beneficial to meditate on the sufferings of Christ. To a Christian, the cross and all the tools of Christ's destruction are reminders of His love for us, and the call placed upon our lives; in the ideal case of an informed Christian, like the one you speak of apparently, such reminders as nails or crosses are carried to help us to ever bear in mind the love of God for men, and the grace He's shown unto them in His suffering on the cross. Such ornaments are tools meant to help us remember that call which Christ has placed upon our lives.

Chamberlain,

When Jesus died 2000 years ago, so did I. Here is a fact we all know too well:

"The wages of sin is death" (Romans 3:23)

I've sinned, the wages for my sin is my death. I've turned from God, we all deserve to take the consequences of our actions. It is justice speaking. God is infinite in love and so He is a Just God. A God of Justice. If God allows pain with no consequence fear would enter our hearts. But instead we worship! We worship because He sentenced sin to death. In heaven there will be no more pain, no more death.

The wages of sin is death. We have all sinned we all deserve to die. We have all turned from God and we don't know how to turn back. And then God sent Jesus. He sent Jesus to DIE IN OUR PLACE! He proved Himself to be both perfectly Merfciful and perfectly Just. He convicted sin to the death proving Himself Just. Yet it was a part of He Himself who died... woah.... !!!... thus proving Himself to be perfectly Merciful.

Here lies the core of Christianity. The GREAT NEWS OF LIFE!!! We are not called to stop sinning, we are called to accept Jesus' death for our sins. When Jesus died, I died, for His death gave me eternal life! And my eternal life begins right now.

The Gospel, The Good News, our God made provision for us His creations allowing us a second chance. Perhaps the nail causes your new employee to think upon these things.

hmm, interesting. i've never heard of Christians carrying around an 8 in. cross with them to an interview. i've heard of people wearing a cross necklace, or let's say a nail on a necklace, or get christian symbols for tattoos, but never carrying around basically an 8 inch weapon. sounds a little either like paranoia, or maybe just some symbol for her. isn't conceal and carry of a weapon illegal in most states?

i don't know if i'd be paranoid of it, until she turns that religious symbol threatening to other co-workers. i mean it would be different if it was a necklace, but an 8 inch nail? if it would be something turned into threatening the harm of others, then of course appropiate action must be done. but when nothing has happened, there is no reason to keep an eye like a government big brother of her over it. it's different i'll say that much, but just as long as she doesn't turn it into something threatening the well-being of other employees, and she hasn't done anything like that yet, even if she is just getting hired, still the point is nothing bad has happened so what right does a boss have to assume the negative about someone just because maybe they what i would consider an unorthodox way of expressing her personal faith? i mean it may not be unorthodox because of how Christian history has gone, but do you know a lot of people that would make up the majority that carries an 8 in. nail around them as a symbol of whatever faith they believe in?

I'd have some concern over the mention that this nail is her 'weapon'. Some people who are 'religous' have mental disorders, just like the un'religious sometimes have mental disorders.

Granted, a weapon could be used against evil. This person could, for instance, be an alcoholic fighting addiction and sometimes carrying something tangible like that helps, I carry certain things now and then, like a piece of paper that has written on it, I am with you always... I hold it in my hand or touch it inside my pocket at times in my life that are very very hard for me.

But I don't call it my weapon.

I guess you'll have to ask.

Just do it by at least 10 inches away from her.

It does seem a little weird, doesn't it?? Of course, it may be just a personal reminder of what Christ went through for her. I carry little reminders around alot- necklaces, etc... If that's what it is, then she shouldn't mind explaining it to you, right?

Although... 8 inches... yikes! I wouldn't want to cart something that big around in my pocket! Just my personal $0.02 though... ;)

The dmiller above was correct when he said that this is probably a music band. I haven't checked the lyrics and do not know if this is a Christian oriented band. But they do look like a rock band.
Some people do listen to bands (maybe to an unhealthy extreme at times. But we do the same with sports sometimes), they take the crusifixion of Christ to heart and they do carry protection against violence.

So, this is explainable.

Thanks,
Ed

Or she is really some kind of a satanist. Some of these people actually revel in the fact that Christ was tormented.

At any rate, it is a red flag I would keep in the back of my head. If she starts foaming at the mouth while her head is spinning in circles, its time to find an exorcist.....
That's really kinda funny!!!! (the second part I mean....wouldn't wanna experience it though....yikes....)

A weapon doesn't necessarily have to be something that is a violence-mechanism only used when someone is trying to steal your purse. Because you said that she jokingly said it was a weapon, maybe she meant that it was her way of fighting her internal battles and those of which she's faced with daily. What happened to positivity and having faith in people? Roughly 75% of the people that actually responded to the original question said something about using it for violence, insanity, or things of satanic or demonic motivation. Maybe she carries it for the same reason that 'Scottish Joy' wears a cross necklace, or 'verakech' carries papers. While I'm not ruling out the fact that she may not carry it to remind her of Christ, she shouldn't be so easily judged just because her reminder of Him is different from the most common.

If someone told me to carry around a 9" nail, I wouldn't ... because a person could get arrested these days for carrying around anything like that, with all of the metal detectors in public buildings, and stuff. That is nutty to ask someone to do this, and I don't care what the reason really is, it is a bad idea.
