I'm thinking about becoming a sperm donor, and I'm curious as to whether people on this board think that sperm donation is morally permissible.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So I suppose you feel that fertility diagnosis and treatment is immoral if it requires a sample of sperm.

While the act of masturbation isn't a sin, it's the thought process that makes it one. However, I'm sure the Lord's gonna forgive you, since your helping out your fellow man.
P.S.:
I'll be living in sin for the next 6-8 weeks. I just got a vasectomy and I have to touch in order to get rid of the excess sperm in my body.

It's part of Catholic teachings. I understand the reasoning, but I believe in safe sex too.
Maybe that's why I'm Pentecostal and not Catholic.

Oh yeah. Sperm donation. Go for it. I tried to donate (read: sell) my eggs once but they wouldn't take me (too many family health problems. Too bad as I could have used the $6,000 they were paying).

Well, I don't really know, I guess it's not considered a body part?
Maybe it's not so much "selling" as it is "being financially compensated"...you know, like when you donate plasma and get paid for that. I really have no idea.
If they'd accepted me, I'd have done it for free, probably, but the money wouldn't have hurt at all!

It's not illegal to be compensated for "egg donation" Your "eggs" aren't considered body parts.

I don't consider it immoral. I'm personally slightly squeamish about the idea of actually using a sperm donor, but I spent most of my fertile years trying NOT to get pregnant so I guess I can't really relate to the idea of actually needing a donor in order to have a child.

It should happen here in the U.S. I'm glad to see that others have benefitted from it, and I think that more and more people would get a donor in time if this were so.

I'm not comfortable with the idea of organ sales. That impoverished guy from Turkey gave his life for a few thousand dollars so that some rich guy who could afford to buy his parts could live.. I just don't see the benefit. (I also see a lot of potential for abuse.)

My 18 year old daughter is donor conceived. We are currently trying to locate any 1/2 siblings and even attempt to make contact with the donor through a registry: www.donorsiblingregistry.com
A large portion of the recipients today are single mothers by choice and lesbian couples. If you are comfortable with that and you understand that any child you help create may one day want to know more about you, I think it is a wonderful and generous gift.
If you contact me privately, I will give you some links to discussion groups that could further your education about this.

No offense is intended by this at all, but that's one of the things that scares me off of donating my eggs or anything like that. What if, in 18 years, a bunch of people tried to get in touch with me, random kid in tow, hoping that somehow I'd care that this person was biologically related to me? I'd freak.

My main reason for posting is to help those that are considering donating (sperm/eggs/embryos) understand that their donations could create human beings that may or may not seek them later.
The commercial banks that advertise for donations do a very poor job of educating both donors and recipients. Most are just in the business to make a profit.
I'm not trying to discourage anyone from donating but I do want anyone considering this to educate themselves before making this kind of decision.
As for actively seeking contact with my daughter's biological father and/or 1/2 siblings, we would never intrude on anyone's privacy that is why the registry is operating. It is there for those that want to be found but many people aren't aware of its existence.
