  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you think there is any value in speculation alone?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "of value". Wild and baseless speculations can pass the time and be entertaining. Is that of value?

If we are talking about being of value with respect to describing the universe, then I would say that speculations need to be grounded in facts. If you don't start with facts then chances are high that your speculations will not be of value in determining how the universe actually works.

If you want to define "of value" as "having entertainment value" then that is fine, just as long as this definition is used consistently through the thread.

I'll let people explain if/when they think speculation has value. I don't want to restrict that - it was just one example where I'm open to speculating.

Restricting the conversations to a specific meaning for "value" would actually be much more helpful. If the word can mean whatever you want then the discussion will meander all over the place.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by speculation, but clearly the Gendankenexperiment has a long and fruitful history.

"A thought experiment is a device with which one performs an intentional, structured process of intellectual deliberation in order to speculate, within a specifiable problem domain, about potential consequents (or antecedents) for a designated antecedent (or consequent)"

I think speculation can have indirect value, whether solidly grounded in fact or not, because it can get the creative 'juices' flowing by priming the subconscious with concepts and ideas which may trigger new associations.

However, I don't think the speculations themselves are likely to have value unless they can be a reasonable basis for the development of scientific hypotheses.
