  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

my nephew has multiple disabilities. He has Down's Syndrome, was considered deaf for years, but actually has limited hearing and wears hearing aids to assist his hearing. There are many ways of assisting children with hearing disabilities. My brother and his wife learned to 'sign' so that they could continue to interact with their son. Perhaps this would be a possibility ?

Do any of you have a special needs child?

My daughter has a hearing loss in one ear. It really hasn't affected anything yet, she's only 1 and hasn't known anything else. It will probably start to be a factor of sorts when she reaches preschool.
The more you are proactive in working with her the better she will be. Do you have her in any special programs for the Deaf? Teaching her sign language?
A website for parents of Deaf children. Hope this helps.

Do you have your daughter in a Early Intervention program? My son goes twice a wk & I've noticed a difference in just 1month :) it's amazing what a Speech or Occupational Therapist can do. Good luck & if you ever want anyone 2 talk with I'm available:)

Hey 49erfan, I have been completely deaf in my left ear for about a year now (due to a rare ear tumor that was too large for them to save my hearing "parts"). I really was upset at learning that my hearing couldn't be saved thinking that it would be more of a factor in my life that it turned out to be. I'm still suprised by it, but, even after losing ALL hearing function, it doesn't have any real effect on my everyday life.
There are two situations that come to mind when I even notice a difference. If there is alot of background noise I definitely don't hear as well.
Or, occasionally, I have trouble determining where sounds come from. For example, in a crowded room, if someone is calling my name, I have to look around to figure out who wants to talk to me.

I'm totally NOT a professional, and this sounds so stupid, but having my hearing loss, my best advice would be to when talking to her, make sure, no matter how many times you say the same thing, or how loud you sound, make sure you get some recognition from your talking to her, ie: a smile, a flicker in her eye, anything to let you know that she understood you. :)

I'm also a strong mom of a special needs child, my 4 yo ds is autistic. I still do not have peace about it, my heart is broken wide open for the son I thought I had, but everyday that passes, the Lord is helping me through it.

God Bless!!!!!!!!

My youngest daughter (8yo) is severely/profoundly mentally retarded and autistic. My 9yo has ADHD. My oldest dd had either severe ADHD, COBPD (childhood-onset bipolar disorder) or Asperger Syndrome (which is on the autism spectrum). She died last year in an accident. She was 10.

P.S. Ivory, That's neat how you help out with your cousin's son. My (8yo) daughter lives over an hour away from me. I know that if I was her, I would appreciate your help immensely.
