Hey 49erfan, I have been completely deaf in my left ear for about a year now (due to a rare ear tumor that was too large for them to save my hearing "parts"). I really was upset at learning that my hearing couldn't be saved thinking that it would be more of a factor in my life that it turned out to be. I'm still suprised by it, but, even after losing ALL hearing function, it doesn't have any real effect on my everyday life.
There are two situations that come to mind when I even notice a difference. If there is alot of background noise I definitely don't hear as well.
Or, occasionally, I have trouble determining where sounds come from. For example, in a crowded room, if someone is calling my name, I have to look around to figure out who wants to talk to me.
I'm totally NOT a professional, and this sounds so stupid, but having my hearing loss, my best advice would be to when talking to her, make sure, no matter how many times you say the same thing, or how loud you sound, make sure you get some recognition from your talking to her, ie: a smile, a flicker in her eye, anything to let you know that she understood you.
I'm also a strong mom of a special needs child, my 4 yo ds is autistic. I still do not have peace about it, my heart is broken wide open for the son I thought I had, but everyday that passes, the Lord is helping me through it.
God Bless!!!!!!!!
