Don't you have charismatic Baptist churches in your part of the world? There are quite of few of them in my state of Queensland, Australia.

Discussing gifts of the Spirit in a Baptist directory should be normal as the Baptists mostly are strong on the authority of Scripture. If the Scripture teaches the gifts of the Spirit as it does in passages such as Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12-14, it is normal to be discussing the gifts of the Spirit in a Baptist thread.

Perhaps there are others who have contributed to this thread who could tell of charismatic Baptist churches in your part of the world.

A JW can claim to be a Christian and a Baptist's can claim to be a Charismatic, but neither one could be taken seriously. Both of these claims are in opposition of each other, in the fundamentals of their ideas and belief systems.

Stelow,

Are you saying that to believe 1 Corinthians 12-14 and Romans 12 (including the gift of tongues) is contrary to a Baptist's view of the Bible? How can a Baptist belief system be contrary to what the Bible teaches?

We may have different interpretations, but my being a charismatic Baptist is not in conflict with the teachings of Scripture.

I am very surprised at the amount of discussion that this subject has generated. In the UK, Baptist churches that hold a cessationist view are now rare. 30 or 40 years ago, this subject would have caused heated debate but not today. We have charismatic Baptist churches, and those that aren't, still generally accept that the so-called charismatic gifts are still available today.

well they arent so called charismatic gifts, speaking in tongues is a gift, its just that it isnt rated very highly amongst the gifts and called common, even though we barely hear about it in the NT.
Those who speak in tongues of mysteries can vouch that its no big deal, I can vouch that I often get interpretation causing me to pour forth, scripture, worship and praise in English, but words of knowledge is what I really want gifting in.
