What does everybody think about the subject of speaking in tongues? I, myself, believe that this is manifesting God's power. There are two types of recieving, which are Greek words, in the Word of God. Dechomai is receiving holy spirit to capacity and lambano receiving holy spirit into manifestation. Speaking in Tongues is the lambano. I did not come up with this myself it is in the Word. Acts 8 has a good example of dechomai and lambano.

I've only heard one person who claimed to be speaking in tongues and it was unintelligible babbling. The bible (1 Corinthians 14) clearly shows that "tongues" are intelligible languages and should only be exercised if someone who is able to interpret is present.

I've also heard the point of view that the "miraculous" gifts of the Holy Spirit (tongues, prophecy, healing, etc) were only able to be passed on by the Apostles themselves. The reference for this idea is Acts 8:18. If this is the case, then these spiritual gifts (again, the "miraculous" ones) died with the generation after the Apostles. Thoughts on this?

I suppose I am undecided on the topic. I used to deny that speaking in tongues was still possible, but I was pretty much just going by what I was taught rather than searching it out for myself.

I would not knock the sincerity of a church that practiced it, but I have a huge problem with the small number of churches that teach it is essential for salvation. To believe that, one would have to believe that Christianity was a soon-lost religion rediscovered by some turn of the century Pentacostal movement. I have never heard tell of this practice throughout church history.
