BT,

I posted this link toward the beginning of this thread, but I thought it might be worth mentioning again. This is an excellent article on the subject of tongues by Lehman Strauss. If he is not a name that you are familiar with...he's worth getting to know (so to speak). My parents knew him personally...great warrior of the faith.

While there was a gift of tongues in the NT...there is no way to know that the babble used today is that gift of tongues. In fact, almost all rational methods to confirm the gift of tongues for today lead one to believe that itis false.

So what does that say? It says that a huge percentage of evangelical christians are chasing after signs. Many of these same people start searching for more signs and in the same way they accept babbling as tongues, they accept all sorts of other things. I don't think it will lead to revival...it will eventually lead to disallusion.

Oops, I know this isn't what you meant BT. But just to clarify: God's word had not yet been completed, but they did have the Old Testament, the Law and the Prophets, which spoke of Christ.

I still think it is a stretch to apply the "that which is perfect" to the closing of the canon. "We know in part" and "then that which is in part shall be done away", has our ability to know been eliminated by the completion of God's word? I know many Christians who act like it, but this isn't really the case, or isn't suppolsed to be.

That's a good point Timothy. They yet had to Old Testament but they were living out/writing the New. During the time that they were beginning to spread the word (much like in our day) there were hordes of "sects" of false teachers who also used the Old Testament (we see this in Acts 5:36-37). The idea of signs and wonders has always been a reinforcing act that showed God was speaking, it got the attention in an undeniable way. False teachers have always been around, and will always be around until the end. The Old Testament pointed towards Christ but even this part of the revelation wasn't complete. We know that these images or types of Christ exist in the Old Testament but to the Israelites at that time they were still a "shadow" (Hebrews 10:1). God used the signs to spread His word and get the attention of the people. This is the same reason that Jesus performed signs and wonders Acts 2:22 "Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:" (I have a sermon about "signs and wonders" on the website.. follow my url in my profile if you want to hear it..)...

for the second part..

"Knowledge" here refers to the supernatural gift of knowledge (1 Cor. 12:8), not common knowledge (which I agree seems to have passed away as well in some cases). So I would answer, yes knowledge has been eliminated as a particular gift of the Holy Spirit with the completion of God's revelation.

Hey good article. He makes some good points. Unfortunately when you get to the bottom of the page you read (of the author):
