In my experience in the prophetic over the years, I have come to learn that speaking in tongues activates the prophetic in a person. This is why Paul valued it so much, and spoke it more often than his contemporaries. Because he spoke in tongues so much, all his letters to the church were prophetic in nature, and now form the bulk of the New Testament. This shows the awesome power of tongues, that we are still reading the prophetic words of Paul more than 2000 years after he wrote them.

If you look at the bulk of Christian literature that was written in the same period, most of it has not had the status of the inspired Word of God. There were many gospels and letters written to churches, but Paul's stand head and shoulders over them all. Is it then a coincidence that this is so, and that he spoke in tongues more than anyone else?

In my experience of the prophetic in my ministry, some of the most powerful and amazing events have happened as the result of praying and speaking in tongues beforehand. I remember ministering to a house group, and after giving the teaching, I sensed a strong desire to speak in tongues. I asked the group if I could do that, and they allowed me to pray in tongues. I spoke a different language than normal, and it seemed to lift me onto a different plane of the prophetic. Then I put a chair in the middle of the room and invited those who wished to receive ministry to sit in it. Every time I touched the shoulder of a person in that chair, God gave me a word for that person. Now I didn't know these people at all, and it was the first time I had ever been among them, but they got really excited because every word was 100 percent accurate, and they knew that there was no way I could have know about the details of their lives in order to give words out of my natural mind to them.

If you read the Prophetic forum on CF (which is now deactivated) you will see my Prophetic Encouragement thread. I gave many prophecies on that thread, and the feedback from people told that that I was totally accurate. This thread was started after me deciding one month before that I was going to embark on a project of praying in tongues every spare moment I got. The four weeks of praying in tongues released the prophetic in me like never before.

The pastor who taught me about the ministry of the Holy Spirit had a very unique ability in tongues to release the power of God in a meeting. Just as the meeting was about to start, he would walk up and down the middle aisle, praying in tongues. Everyone else started praying as well. Then the power of God came down on that meeting, and the strongest toughest sinners broke down and wept like babies. People were giving prophecies and tongues messages all over the place, and others were going up to the front for ministry. After about an hour of this, someone asked the pastor if he was going to preach. He said, "God is moving in such power, I don't need to preach. He told me to stand aside and witness His glory in this place." I will tell you, it ruined me for anything else in Pentecostalism to see the power of God moving like that. The key in that man's ministry was that he prayed in tongues like no one else I knew. To hear him pray made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

So I believe that there is a definite link between the use of tongues and the activation of the other gifts of the Spirit. All the ministries I know that move in the power of the Spirit have a deep reverence for the gift of tongues. They know that it is the key for the outpouring of the grace and power of God on meetings and people.

No wonder the devil hates tongues. When tongues are rightly used, his kingdom suffers much damage, and he loses his dominion over people who come under the awesome power of God.

I was prayed for by this pastor once. He came up behind me, put his hand on my shoulder, and prayed in a tongue that made me feel charged with electricity all though my being. I closed my eyes and said "Lord do your will in me." Then I had a mental vision of the Lord in all his glory and holiness standing before me. Before I knew it I was on my face weeping my heart out. When I got up, I was a different person. The power of God had hit me in a way that changed me forever. This was the direct result of someone praying in tongues for me.

So, I cannot take seriously those who would ridicule and doubt the power of the gift of tongues. I have experienced too much of the power of God in my own life, and my observation of those whom I respect in the Lord to accept what these debunkers say. This is why I defend it so strongly.

We need to learn of the awesome power of tongues to change lives, churches, ministries, and bring the awesome sovereign power of God down on meetings, so that people know what the real ministry of the Holy Spirit is like.

It is much more than the happy happy clap clap levity that we so in so many Pentecostal and Charismatic churches. Using the gift of tongues is much more than saying 'ba ba ba' in some emotionally charged meeting. It is getting away with God and getting to grips with Him in the Spirit, expressing in the prayer language the deepest desires of our hearts, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our tongues into deeper levels of intercession, travail and effective prayer.

I have only had the experience once or twice when I have prayed in tongues to the extent where I ran out of language and ended up just groaning on the floor to God. I did not find that very pleasant. I felt as if I was being turned inside out. I was glad when it was over and I could pray more logically again.

I had the experience in intercession for a very sick person, that my prayer language came out so fast that I could not distinguish the words I was speaking. It was as if it were gushing out of my spirit. Everytime I spoke in tongues it was this language. It drained me right out. I was exhausted afterwards, emptied. I found out afterwards that this person, near to death had pulled through, and eventually recovered.

There are times when I have been praying through in tongues for someone or some situation, and I broken through something in my spirit and started to giggle and laugh. This was a sign to me that I had prayed through to victory. This was after a couple of hours of real wrestling in the Spirit.

One time it was on a beach, and after an hour or two of praying through in tongues, I got a mental vision of the Lord on His throne over and above the problem I was praying about. I got so released that I ran up and down that beach laughing and yahooing. It makes me quite joyful just to remember it, and it was over 20 years ago that it happened. After that, some major positive changes happened in my life and I became successful in the academic field obtaining a masters degree when before I was a school dropout. This is the awesome, lifechanging power of God.

And it is definitely linked to my use of the gift of tongues. This is why believe in it so strongly, and encourage as many people as I can to get it from the Lord and to use it effectively for His glory.

I have been asked to share some of these things at one of our Propheic Equipping Days when the theme will be the gift of tongues. I would really appreciate if some of you out there have had similar experiences of the grace and power of God as the result of praying in tongues, share that with me, either on this thread or by PM to me. Having a good number of powerful examples from different places will add a great deal of depth and blessing to what I intend to share.

I would appreciate if this was not a debating thread. If you want to debate the issue, start a new thread special designed for your debate, and I will gladly contribute to it. For this thread, I would like to reserve it for examples of the power of the Holy Spirit being activated in people and meetings through prayer in tongues. I know that if you love the Lord, others, and the power of the Holy Spirit, you will respect this.

Oscarr - so glad to see you posting more - I always miss your posts.

This thread will help a lot of very young people on here who are so hungry for the Word on speaking in tongues. Thank you so much for this.

Do you mean you want experiences for how God has released the power of tongues in your life in your ministry or do you want times when you really felt led to pray and what happened after your prayer?

Interesting stuff Oscarr! I read through your rebuttal you posted here a week ago, and liked it also!

You wanted examples of how tongues were being used in other people, so I'll provide some and hopefully others will be able to give some unique ones to you also. And I agree with you, this is not a debate.

I think one of the best examples GOD gave me is when a hurricane was heading towards Hawaii back around '94 or '95. I was stationed there in the Navy. I felt I could ask GOD to stop this hurricane from hitting the islands, so I began to pray in tongues. I always feel The Spirit lead my hands to lift in worship to GOD when I pray in tongues, so He started to lift my hands and place them in a position like I was slowly pushing something away from me as I prayed this way.

Wouldn't you know it, I watched the news on TV, and it was like the hurricane stopped and lingered a distance away from Hawaii, then it moved to the side away from Hawaii, and continued it's path without touching the islands.

Without my opinion turning into a debate, I do think it was the gift of miracles in action, but it was put in action through the agency of praying in tongues.

There are many other examples, but one is good enough, let other people post theirs also.

Currently, I've started to sit in the back of my church now and pray in tongues throughout the worship part of our service, and also throughout the pastor's message. I ask GOD to let HIS anointing be upon the pastor during his message and afterwards, and it is starting to have tremendous results. Also, the movement of The Spirit in the church is greater. The orderly usage of the gifts starts flowing through our people in greater manifestations.

I saw on the news what happened to that hurricane! It just had to be an intervention from the Lord. It was great that you were part of that. Thank you for sharing these things.

Either would be very useful. What we need are plenty of examples of how the use of tongues changes things, ministrywise or in our personal lives.

My daughter lives in tornado alley in a mobile home - she lived 450 miles from me - she called me one evening screaming, the tornado was barreling down on her and she said the floor in her kitchen was standing up 5 inches from the floor - she was ready to take flight. - she screamed "pray mom, pray" - I gave it no thought whatsoever - the tongues just came forth.

My husband had never heard me pray in tongues he came through the kitchen - I was praying loud and pounding on the table - he said "oooohhhh" and out he went -

My daughter's neighbor was laying in the ditch to get out of harm's way and witnessed the following - the tornado split and went around my daughters home - took out some trees and a storage building, but missed her home with not one bit of damage. The neighbor could not believe it.

================ Here is another one.

I was working in the yard one day and felt the urge to pray in tongues - I did not know what for, but obeyed and started praying in tongues.

The next day my son called - they had been in a terrible car accident - they had traveled for 17 hours and my daughter in law took over for awhile - they were 3 hours from home - it was my son, his wife and two year old twins - my daughter-in-law fell asleep and totaled the SUV - it rolled 2 and 1/2 times landed on its top with all 4 of them hanging from the roof by their seat belts - my son and daughter in law were able to craw out the windows and unhook the twins and all were safe - my daughter in law had some hair ripped out - but that was the only sign of injury.

The police lady started crying when she wrote up the accident - my son ask what was wrong - the police lady said she just wrote up an accident in the very same place the week before and killed all 4 members of one family.

Here is something really neat that happened - there was a quarter that bent double - my daughter in laws name is Erica and she was born in Oregon - all you could read on the quarter was erica - which was part of America - but you could see erica - in God we trust and minted in Oregon.

I have more - but I'll let others tell their story first.

Paul was called by God to the Office of the Apostle.

An Apostle is a sent one. Paul was sent by and called by God to do what he did.

Without the call and anointing of God to do what he did, all the speaking in tongues he could do would have been to no avail. :)

I would agree with that whole heartedly oscar. I think the reason for this is that when we pray in tongues it is our spirit praying and our spirit connecting with God's spirit is who the prophetic comes into being. Paul says that when we pary in tongues our spirit profits. God I believe can communicate better with us when we have prepared our spirits to receive him.

I got a vision while I was trying to pray in tongues... If that makes any sense...

This is a wonderful example of the gift of tongues releasing the prophetic in you. Would you like to share your vision with us here on this thread?

Oh, and I giggled when I saw the phrase "grace and power" at least twice in your article.... *looks at member title*

And I missed the prophetic encouragement thread.... :'(

Now that is a real blessing. I must have eaten prophetic cornflakes this morning.

You will need to go into the Prophetic Ministry forum under the Ministry section and go back nearly two years of threads to get to it. It takes a bit of delving but well worth it.

While I think the general principle you are laying out here is a good one, I think you have inadvertantly overnarrowed its scope based on your personal experiences/giftings.

Scripture says "build yourself up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost". Praying in tongue certainly serves to build one up in their faith. I liken faith to a battery. Scripture says "faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God"-- so hearing the word gives us more faith (or a bigger battery). Praying in tongues serves to "build up" that faith (or charges the battery). And faith is what "powers" all spiritual gifts.

Now, you personally operate in prophecy. So, when you pray in tongues, it empowers the prophetic, since that is your gifting. For others, it may empower gifts of healings, for others miracles.

One thing I do want to point out... you stated
Because he spoke in tongues so much, all his letters to the church were prophetic in nature, and now form the bulk of the New Testament.
Actually, there were letters from Paul to the churches that were not prophetic-- and are not included in scripture. II Corinthians, for instance, refers to a letter that was written sometime after I Corinthians that we no longer have copies of. While that letter was also a letter of instruction for the church, it was never included in scripture.

With that said, however, we do know from Acts 13 that "certain prophets and teachers" were gather, with Paul listed as one of them, so we know he was either a prophet or a teacher (I would argue he was actually both). His praying in tongues helped to "charge up" his faith, thereby empowering the spiritual gifts in which he operated-- and resulting in writings that were both prophetic and teaching in nature.

The vision was from February 20th. I was worshiping in my room. I had my eyes closed and my hands raised. In my mind's eye, I saw my hands changing. They developed nail marks. Somewhere inside, I got the feeling that Jesus was giving me His hands.

It was SOOO real. I actually opened my eyes and looked at my hands to make sure I wasn't getting stigmata.

I asked God is this was from Him and these words came over the headphones:

The blind will see,
the deaf will hear,
the dead will live again.
The lame will leap,
the dumb will speak
the praises of the Lamb.

Oscarr, I respect you very much, but I have to disagree with you on this in part. I think that speaking in tongues can get one stirred up so to speak, but the prophetic is only predicated upon one thing, the Holy Spirit. I have had prophetic utterances come upon me in the most strange of circumstances that were totally devoid of tongues. I understand the spirit of what you are saying and do somewhat know where you are coming from, however I think it can be dangerous to say that one is dependent upon the other.

While I think the general principle you are laying out here is a good one, I think you have inadvertantly overnarrowed its scope based on your personal experiences/giftings.

I appreciate and respect your view, and I would say that you are correct on the basis of your wider knowledge of the concurrent literature of the period.

What I am proposing is that the gift of tongues is more powerful and affects more of our spiritual service than we may realise. There are many in Pentecostal churches who use tongues as some sort of punctuation between their prayers in English, and use it as a 'toy', without having an insight into its real power and significance in our spiritual lives.

I am basing my view on the role models that I have seen in the mentors that I have been under during my earlier Christian life, who seemed to know how to use the gift of tongues in a way that brought the sovereign power of God down on a meeting like nothing I had seen before. It really did seem to me that exercising tongues in a certain way released the prophetic in such a powerful way that even some of the hardest and roughest male sinners broke down and wept before God like little babies. To see the power of God bring people to Christ like that is a life changing experience just as an observer. To have it happen to me, and it only happened once, when my pastor laid hands on me and spoke in his special tongue, that I had a mental vision of the Lord standing before me in all his glory and holiness, giving me the same reaction as the Apostle John when he fell at the feet of Jesus as if dead. I was 21 years old at the time, and a Christian for 4 years. That changed my life forever and led to me starting to know the Lord as a real person in my life.

I don't think that we should limit tongues to just personal prayer or tongues messages in church. There is a ministry of diverse tongues, and I suspect that covers a whole range of different functions of tongues that we have not really discovered yet.

I am willing to seek the Lord to find out what there is in these different kinds of tongues, and what they can be used for, and not limit myself to current Pentecostal practice, which I think puts tongues in a small box and severely limits what the Holy Spirit could do through the exercise of the gift.
