  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You can see things breaking off the spacecraft at 35:00. Bringing the video chat to life as well. It looks like the second stage suffered a RUD, or a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.

Oh no. Do the engineers have any probable cause for what made the rocket go boom?

I am wondering if the fairing damaged the second stage as it separated.
Potentially, though I can not speculate. When will SpaceX publish an update? Space Magazine (not affiliated with SpaceX) said that the 2nd stage tank had a leak, so my assumption was right, but did not specify the cause of the leak.

Quote from Space.com: "The rocket's upper stage, which was hauling 20 Starlink spacecraft to low Earth orbit, encountered a problem — a leak of liquid oxygen, which had serious repercussions for the mission."

Also, SpaceX itself says that the Starlink satellites were successfully deployed, but at an altitude that is lower compared to normal, which means sometime in the future, the satellites will burn up in the atmosphere due to aerodynamic friction.

From SpaceX: "Although the stage survived and still deployed the satellites, it did not successfully circularize its orbit, but it did passivate itself as normally performed at the end of each mission. This left the satellites in an eccentric orbit with a very low perigee of 135 km (84 mi), which is less than half the expected perigee altitude."

Yeah, it looked like the satellites launched properly. Which parts fell off?
I wouldn't know one part from another :), I saw the flare up and wondered if that was normal, I saw what looked like somekind of liquid trailing off and a buildup of frost but none of that seemed to detrimentally effect the desired successful function of the rocket. Though they mentioned "an unscheduled disassembly" I wouldn't have known that even happened but they did.

The Federal Aviation Administration stated July 12 that it will require an investigation into the anomaly. “The FAA will be involved in every step of the investigation process and must approve SpaceX’s final report, including any corrective actions,” it stated. “A return to flight is based on the FAA determining that any system, process, or procedure related to the mishap does not affect public safety.” - Starlink satellites lost on Falcon 9 upper stage failure

I would suspect further delays. - Launch Schedule – Spaceflight Now

Darn. Well hey, safety is the number one priority. In fact, the Bible even talks about safety. At least the FAA is investigating this anomaly, and that SpaceX will correct this mistake.

Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV): "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

Deuteronomy 22:8 (NIV): "When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof."

The frost looked abnormal. Hey, if you want to get to know all these parts of a spaceflight and of the rocket itself, watch a few more rocket launch videos with us. @rockytopva posts about one per week, based upon the SpaceX launch schedule and when the video live streams are available.

Thanks, Alex. Especially with the upcoming Starship 5 mission on the horizon. Knowing the challenges makes keeping up with the mission all the more exciting. It looks like the two major challenges for SpaceX is keeping their Raptor engines lit and keeping their Starship intact during reentry.

You are welcome brother. How come some of the engines on the Starship fail to light? Were the engines made in China? But yes, I am excited for the next Starship mission. If I am not mistaken, Starship uses liquid methane, the liquid form of the gas found in flatus. However, methane does not have a scent. The reason why flatus from cows and humans have a scent is cos of hydrogen sulfide. H2S boils at -60 degrees Celsius or -76 degrees Fahrenheit. Hydrogen sulfide has a similar structure to water, except where the oxygen atom is replaced by a sulfur atom.

The unique properties of oxygen is the reason why water has a higher boiling point (100 C / 212 F) compared to other hydrogen chalcogenides. The reason why boiling water scalds is due to protein denaturation of flesh. Denaturation is where protein unfolds itself (and is the same process that happens inside of a boiling egg). Think of a knot being unwound. These knots bind our flesh together. When the knots untangle, the flesh gets destroyed. But, this is a little dark and morbid, so the explanation will be cut short.

The second stage failure was due to a liquid oxygen leak. Looks like the satellites will burn up on reentry. I still suspect the fairing separation may have contributed to the problem. The FAA will want a good explanation into all of this before re-certifying their wings.

I knew that something was off when looking at the frost. The oxygen leak was bad for the Falcon 9. Hopefully Starship does not have the same problem. Who knows, if the satellites burn up over my place at night, it would be cool to see the flaming debris, as long as it does not hurt anyone on the ground. However, Earth is 70% ocean, so that might be unlikely.

The twenty satellites have burned up in the earth's atmosphere.

Wow, that was quick. I am gonna scour the internet if anyone has photos of the satellites burning up.
