I use bromine in my hot tub and thank God for the element when coming out clean. There are a lot of elements to consider when designing a planet!
Amen to that. I thank God for these elements as well. I thank Him for the molecule of water (H2O), as only Earth has liquid water as far as we can tell. God gave us over 90+ naturally occurring elements when He made the Earth.

Yeah, there are aliens in my plot.
Is this different from Star Trek? Then there was "Lost in Space". The plot was a little thin so they tried to make up for that in comedy. Science Fiction was very popular in the 60's and early 70's. Before people started to take everything so serious in life.

It is similar to Star Trek, but instead of humans being the main characters, humans are not encountered until the 2570s. The main action occurs with the Xa'na race during the late 21st century up through the first half of the 26th century. The differences between my plot and Star Trek is that some of my plots cover the period of time before space exploration happened. The Xa'na race launched the first crewed mission into orbit above Xa'na in the early 1940s, only less than 2 decades after the end of their second global conflict. By 1948, the Xa'na race send a crewed mission to Ra'eln, their moon located 216,000 miles away from Xanadu.

By the 2050s, the Xa'na have developed a slower-than-light spaceship that visited their nearby stellar neighbor, Idiseni, located 2.1 light-years away from Hesal. In 2060, on the voyage to Idiseni, the ship passes through a small nebula, which interferes with the artificial gravity emitters and force field, causing the ship to temporary jump from 85% the speed of light to 102% the speed of light.

Finally, on the return flight from Idiseni, the ship's computer has done the calculations, manufactured a muon decay catalyzer, and prepared to jump to faster-than-light speeds. After passing through the nebula a second time, the ship adjusted the strength of the graviton emitters in the ship's floors, producing a graviton field that is uneven. More gravitons in the front of the ship and less at the rear meant the space-time continuum could be warped, allowing FTL travel. The ship's computer calculated the right amount of graviton displacement to facilitate travel of 165 times the speed of light, cutting an over two year return journey from 1.8 light-years away down to 4 days. This event occurred in 2062, and marked the first time the Xa'na race have sustained FTL travel. It was the second most important historical event in Xa'na history, after the Molecular Additive Manufacturing Unit (MAMU) was invented in December 2041.

Once the Xa'na invented FTL, that means the Xa'na could meet other alien races such as the Vilcharians, a communal society (one that shares supplies among their own race) around 150 light years away from Xanadu. The Vilcharians have an average life expectancy of only 58 years, cos different species have different biologies. Vilcharian ships in the 2060s have a top speed of 224 times the speed of light, but the Vilcharians do not make first contact with the Xa'na until the 23rd century.

Lost in Space I have heard was a good show, especially the 2010s remake.

Guys, space is huge. Even traveling at almost 10 times the speed of light, it would take months for the Yanara freighter to get to the nearest stars. Goes to show how God made this vast cathedral of space, with countless stars lining the deep black skies.

Yo, @rockytopva . What would you do if you were assigned on a two-year mission on a space freighter? For myself, I'd back out. Even if food and basic supplies could be manufactured by Star Trek replicator-style technology or Molecular Additive Manufacturing Units as in my sci-fi universe, the thought of being away from my home planet stuck on a space freighter would be discouraging. Nothing beats the fresh air of living on Earth or an Earth-like planet.

Also, what would you do if you were assigned on a Navy submarine on Earth on a 6 month long mission? It is the same concept, breathing in recycled air, and having limited choice in food. Being inside a vehicle such as a sub or spaceship would drive me crazy after a few weeks. This is one of the reasons I am hesitant of taking a cruise ship.

So guys and gals, how would you design a space freighter?

Sounds to me you're doing a fine job already.

I was a little bored last night and decided to watch Alien, and oddly enough it got me thinking about cargo freighters. It might have been that cargo freighter in the movie, but what do I know? One o the things that came to mind was it would make more sense for the larger freighters making the long haul and smaller ships making the final delivery.

In actual design, something like that would probably be expected to follow a traditional pattern of basic, since the goal in every business is to make money. The design on the Nostromo is, in my view, a little ridiculous. Or, maybe a little overdone. I wonder about the pointy things on the front every time I watch it.

As far as it taking more energy to "bend space," since you are the author, do you have to stick with that? If the energy expended for travel is instead directed at the ship itself, you cut your power consumption dramatically.

Okay, that's the best I can do at the end of the day, lol. Good luck with the solution!

I should try Alien out. Sci-fi follows traditional tropes such as warp drive. Large freighters for long haul would make sense, while smaller ships could make delivery. Maybe a freighter could have small ships that are mounted to the top of the freighter's frame, which can then deliver the cargo. My sci-fi will use gravitons to bend space, as it is easier to explain away with sci-fi jargon compared to energizing the ship.
