Hi everyone
Can someone explain to me what the difference between Southern Baptists and other Baptists is? Is it just geographical or is there any doctrinal differences? I realized the other day I've heard of "Southern Baptists" and "Baptists" and I am wondering if they are the same, or if the SB are a subgroup? Thanks. :)

Hey ps139! This should help you out with finding some various information on different Baptist groups.

Yahoo Directory of Baptist Links - Contains links to many official pages of different Baptist denominations and other Baptist related links.

Google Directory of Baptist Links
- Pretty much the same thing as the Yahoo Directory except it seems to encompass more Baptist denominations.

Crossearch Directory of Baptist Links - This is a directory of Baptist links from a Christian search engine.

I really don't know where to look to find the differences between Southern Baptist and other Baptist groups though. I do know that Southern Baptists believe in eternal security and that some other Baptist groups like the General Baptists do not. Hope this helps! :)

God Bless,
Holly

These three will give you a fair representation of the doctrinal position of three of the more prominent Baptist groups. You will see that they are largely in agreement. Their origins and reasons for being formed differ, but their beliefs are primarily the same.

The two main distinctives about Baptist churches are the autonomy of the local church and Biblical authority. That means you will find many similarities from one church to the next but you will also find many differences from one to the next.

There's really isn't doctrinal differences between the Southern Baptist and like Independent Baptists. Independents are on the most part more legalistic in their teachings and also they support their missionaries differently either through smaller missionary boards or straight to the missionaries.
Southern Baptist has a Cooperative Board where all missionary monies and support go through which doesn't go 100% to the missionaries which is a gripe with independent Baptists. Independent Baptists considers some of the Southern Baptist colleges more liberal while the several Independent Baptists colleges are known for being legalistic. Southern Baptists also has a larger pool of churches to work with while independent Baptists either are exclusive to themselves or work with just a few other "sister" churches.

You also have the Northern Baptist and American Baptists along with Southern Baptist are the biggest groups in the states of Baptist groups. Some churches also don't use the term "Baptist" as part of their names but leave it off & still associate with and consider themselves Baptist.

What is the difference between anabaptist and baptist? And the difference between the whole baptist area and Lutheranism. I just did an ISP on Luther and found that Baptist is basically a more lutheranized version of anabaptists - but of course i could be wrong. just like every other religion.

I am raised in a baptist church and all, but i do visit other churches, i was wondering if that is bad seeing as here we like to disassociate ourselves, not only with other religions but also with other denominations. Or are they not christians? Of course what say do I have this is my first post and I am a baptist who is currently questioning certain denominational policies and doctrines. Maybe I am too out of line but I do think that we should allow people of differing beliefs to voice some opinions here, the reason we have moderators is to limit other user bashing, but according to the title we shouldn't be having arbitrators. I do respect wanting to avoid people being hurt. But consider this limiting others to post opinions could be hurtful as well. Many people think Christians to be stuck up and self-centred - that I would like to believe as false, but i find restricting others to voice their opinions is kinda crushing to me. I learn the most about my belief when i compare it to others opinions of their belief and my belief, I'm sure it is the same for others. But of course this is my first post I'm a new member, and what kind of proof do we have that I am in fact a Baptist, and chances are though I am a Baptist my post will surely be deleted - but i would like to encourage the moderators to allow people to expand and not keep to their own group of christians not desiring to go out and convert others. How can we convert another person if we do not understand what they at that time believe. Please at least consider my post before deleting it.

Yeah, there are many different types of Baptist churches. There are Southern Baptists, Independent Baptists, Fundamental Baptists, Footwashing Baptists, Primitive Baptists, etc. Honestly, I don't know what the difference is, although I know Fundamental, Footwashing, and Primitive Baptists are very strict many churches not allowing women to speak in the church, no jewelry, no media (radios, TV, internet, etc.).

I attended an American Baptist Church in New England for a couple of years that was very liberal. Coming from a Southern Bible-belt background and being very familiar with conservative Southern Baptists, I **assumed** that American Baptists were doctrinally similar. I was pretty shocked at the difference between the two denominations.

Like was stated before, the Southern Baptists and American Baptist had a split about the time the Civil War happened. I once had a timeline of Baptist History (I'm southern baptist) that contained the history of all the different baptists. Basically, It was all started as a struggle from infant baptism, and we were reformed from the Catholic church. We joined in with a guy named Menin, which later formed the Menonites, but we were all Anabaptists back then. Later, throughout historical circumstances, splits occurred within the denomination, hence creating independents, free-wills, fundamental, american, southern, etc. I found that timeline online by doing a search. Good luck finding it if you try... :)

I'm a rare thing for a baptist I think. I don't disassociate myself from other denominations. I believe that as long as a person knows Jesus Christ as their personal savior they are a part of the body of Christ, and therefore my brother or sister in Christ.

I don't look at a person's denomination when talking about God. I speak of God's love, I speak of the power of His might, and the wonderful grace of Jesus Christ. With that in common, does the rest really matter?

Does Communion vs Lord's Supper matter? It's a fulfillment of the command "Do this in remembrance of Me".

If they are living according to the Word, studying the Word and growing in their spiritual lives, who are we to say "that's wrong". That's the job of the Holy Spirit.
We are to edify the brethren...not tear them down for "legalism" or "liberalism".

Just my 2 cents...and probably more LOL

I am a full Gospel Baptist. I attend a SBC but also believe the gifts of the Holy Spirit did not cease and that all the gifts of the Holy Spirit are for today and for all Christians. I also speak in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. I do believe in the doctrine of the SBC .
