In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Hard-liners plot to replace McCarthy with a deputy as shutdown looms

A contingent of far-right House Republicans are plotting an attempt to remove Kevin McCarthy as House speaker as early as next week, a move that would throw the chamber into further disarray in the middle of a potential government shutdown, according to four people familiar with the effort who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private talks.

Some members of the far-right faction of the party are coalescing around nominating a member of McCarthy’s leadership team, Rep. Tom Emmer (Minn.), to be the next speaker if they can successfully oust McCarthy, according to those people. The members think Emmer is more attuned to their concerns and will better deliver conservative results.

--

Honestly, when the government shutdown hits, everyone should want to replace McCarthy. But the goal needs to be a path forward that a majority of the House can accept. Any Speaker who is closer to the far-right is farther away from a majority.

(and given how hard it was to put McCarthy in place, any such candidate seems very unlikely to become the next Speaker. Then again, under the current conditions, nobody seems likely to become the next Speaker.)

I would hope Republicans would not be stupid enough to remove the Speaker, at least this Congress, in the middle of a government shutdown. If they remove McCarthy, I can see it being a couple of weeks -- while the government remains shut down -- before Republicans can get a new Speaker elected and even begin to try to reopen the government.

With their bare majority, the Republicans won't be able to install a nut job, even a lower profile nut job.

Impeachment committee: you need to impeach the criminals and crazies in your midst, starting with George Santos.

As we know .... there was difficulty with putting McCarthy into speakership, yes there were concerns about how he would lead. McCarthy made promises on some specific things and has not delivered on those promises so is being called out on that ... and rightfully so.

If a government shut down occurs .... both parties are responsible for it. Both parties are responsible for the massive debt we have.

The mass migration is a huge problem because as we see it is causing great chaos across our nation ... this is our biggest problem right now ... it is impacting every aspect of our economy ... overwhelming the system .... if it is not controlled .... IT will shut this nation down (destroy it).

Either way (now or later) ... if the border is not secured to the highest degree ... a shut down will indeed occur (overwhelmed system) ... whether or not the government is funded now or not.

The debt is not shutting down the government. It is the lack of budget/appropriations bills to fund the government in the coming fiscal year.

Yes .... and to do that effects our debt ... so yes it is tied to our debt. Our government is operating on borrowed money (debt). The decision is how much more do we go into debt ... or do we?

Do they get an extra stipend for being Speaker of the House? McCarthy is failing hard - this is worse than Boehner's stint - for much the same sabotage.

My theory is that the Freedom Caucus wants to shut down the government because they can, because that should impact the US economy adversely and because they want to declare Biden's term a failure.

The point being the House majority party failed to deliver a single appropriations bill to the House floor for a vote....until today! What have they been doing for the past 6 months?

1) The far right doesn't have anywhere near the vote to REPLACE McCarthy. All McCarthy needs is 5 Republicans to be loyal to him to prevent any other Republican from being speaker.

2) The Senate will force the House (Dems plus 5 of 18 Republicans in Biden districts) to accept a Senate bipartisan compromise. The question is WHEN and for how long.

3) The Senate can push through a short term bill though November, including monies for disaster relief, Ukraine and the border. The current Senate bill as is could be push throughed with no border monies.

4) THE KEY is to stop doing this every 2 months. McCarthy already agreed to a budget though the election. The Senate should force that compromise though, with some added border language. Then the few far right House members can depose McCarthy if they wish, but they can't force their choice of a replacement.

If you take a calculator, add up deficit growth in all the Republican years and all the Democratic years, and then divide each total by the number of years that party was in office you will learn The Truth.

And the truth is that tax cuts raise the deficit far more than a social safety net that is very modest compared to other advanced countries.

Interesting fact: last time Republicans caused a shutdown the government lost $29 billion, and if Republicans cause our bond rating yo go down the interest on the national debt they themselves caused will grow.

Why would our bond ratings go down? There are no threats with regards to the US paying their debts until after the election.

Because the Republicans playing hardball with the current budget, particularly considering a budget deal was part of the debt ceiling deal, to give the US a budget and debt deal through the next election, makes it likely that the next debt ceiling deal will lead to a shutdown (and not paying our debt on time).

It makes it worse since, this time, the Republicans are the ones who can't agree on a deal -- even before they try to make a deal with Democrats to pass a budget.

I believe the ratings hits came from the debt ceiling negotiations. By Fitch earlier this year, and by S&P back in 2011.

The last minute brinksmanship deals in both of those cases are similar to the current one about the budget. It may not be directly about the ability to pay debts, but I think it does show how poorly the process of funding the government is going, which might give ratings bureaus some pause.

During the last shutdown bond ratings were lowered.

Bankers don't trust the agents of chaos known as the freedom caucus.
Please give us a reference to any bond rating reduction as a result of a government shutdown (rather than a debt limit crisis).

It might, but it never has.

Let's put it another way. When has the Congress approved a budget?

I strongly disagree. 25 Republicans are all that prevents the government from being funded.

83 out of 100 senators have agreed on a law to move forward.

If put up to a House vote, the result would be about the same.
========
Make no mistake. If you object to the bill, that's fine. But please realize that about 25 House members are preventing the House from taking a vote. 25 House members are also preventing a vote on the Budget bill previously agreed to by McCarthy that would fund the government until after the election.
===============
SOLUTION ONE
Put the Senate bill up to a vote, and work on a compromise that runs through the election.

SOLUTION TWO
Put the old compromise bill to a vote; this would bring the budget through the election.

BOTTOM LINE
If Mccarthy won't allow a vote, Democrats should force a vote. And yes, if McCarthy allows a vote, he might be voted out. I would note that the candidate of the 25 will never be approved by the full House.

As I've said, I just don't see Joe budging on the border until enough Democrats call him out. So I expect a long shutdown.

Why would our bond ratings go down? There are no threats with regards to the US paying their debts until after the election.

Government stability/functionality, government revenue/spending predictability and government financial planning abilities are pretty major criteria when it comes to the credit rating of a sovereign nation.

A shut-down damages all of these

That likely won't cause any short term ratings agency action, but it will figure into the ongoing reviews that Fitch, S&P, Moody's and all the others perform.

Fitch highlighted an erosion of confidence when it comes to governance over financial matters as one of the causes of its recent credit downgrade for the USA.
