  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings,
I'm new here and I've found the discussions that I've read so far to be interesting. You all seem knowledgeable and I was wondering if anyone could refer me to some good sources about the whys behind the beliefs of the Catholic faith. (Books by preference as it is easier to confirm that they are approved by the Church) I am Catholic myself, but I wish to gain a greater understanding of my faith so that I may deepen my belief.

And welcome! :)

I'll try to dig out the books I got in RCIA, but the two that come to mind are "Why Do Catholics Do That?" and the Catechism. The CC can be very dry reading, but I found it very helpful, and you probably already have a copy or can get one from your church. I don't know where you could get the other book, but you might ask the RCIA director at your church. :)

There are some very good online sites, too.

www.catholic.com/ is a good place. I found a lot of answers there.

God bless...

A lot of conversion stories also have some good basic explanations of the faith. I know that Rome Sweet Home by Scott Hahn explains quite a bit about the "whys" behind certain faith issues. Other books by Dr. Hahn are also really good (like Hail, Holy Queen).

I haven't really read much other stuff, but I'm willing to bet that "Surprised by Truth", "Crossing the Tiber", and other apologetic/conversion books would have good information in them too.

HTH!

Where to begin? :)

You need a Catechism, of course. And a copy of either edition The Catholic Encyclopedia, either by Peter Stravinskas or Robert Broderick.

Dictionary of the Liturgy, by Jovian Lang.

Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma; Ludwig Ott.

The Catholic Source Book; Peter Klein.

The Oxford Dictionary of Popes; J.N.D. Kelly.

Early Christian Writings; translated by Maxwell Staniforth.

The Twelve; C. Bernard Ruffin.

The Fathers of the Church; Mike Aquilina.

The Faith of the Early Fathers; 3 volumes, William Jurgens.

Patrology; 4 volumes, Johannes Quasten.

Patron Saints; Michael Freze.

Ask Me A Question; Fr. Sheedy.

The Catholic Answer Book; 3 volumes, Peter Stravinskas.

Catholic Replies; James Drummey.

What Catholics Really Believe; Karl Keating.

Catholic Questions, Catholic Answers; Kenneth Ryan.

Catholic and Christian; Alan Schreck.

Why Do Catholics Do That? Kevin Orlin Johnson.

A Brief For Belief: The Case For Catholicism; Frederick Marks.

Unabridged Christianity; Mario Romero.

Pope Fiction; Patrick Madrid.

Not By Scripture Alone; Not By Faith Alone; Not By Bread Alone; all by Robert Sungenis.

Beginning Apologetics; 5 volumes, Frank Chacon and Jim Burnham.

How To Survive Being Married To A Catholic; Rosemary Gallagher and Michael Henesy.

Surprised By Truth; Surprised By Truth 2; both by Patrick Madrid.

Rome Sweet Home; Scott and Kimberly Hahn.

Born Fundamentalist, Born-Again Catholic; David Currie.

By What Authority? Mark Shea.

My Life on the Rock; Jeff Cavins.

Where Is That In the Bible? Patrick Madrid.

Introduction To Mary; Mark Miravalle.

Where We Got the Bible; Henry Graham.

A Handbook of Catholic Sacramentals; Ann Ball.

Relics; Jopan Carroll Cruz.

Angels (And Demons); Peter Kreeft.

Vatican II: The Concilar and Post-Conciliar Documents; 2 volumes, Austin Flannery.

The 2002 Catholic Almanac; Editors of Our Sunday Visitor.

There's a few which deal with basic information and apologetics. If any sound interesting, let me know and I'll give a brief synopsis and the ISBN numbers. :)

Blessings,
---Wols.

Well, Pope Fiction is put out by Basilica Press; their snail mail address is:

Basilica Press
PO Box 675205
Rancho Sante Fe, CA
92067.

There is also at least one major Catholic publisher who carries it; try this site:

www.leafletmissal.org

You should be able to find it there, with ordering information as well. :)

Blessings,

LOL. The really shocking part is, with the exception of the 2002 Catholic Almanac and two of the Sungenis books, I not only have every one of those books, I've read them all!!!

Sheesh.....no wonder people find me so dull! ;)
