Acts 16

"The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?' They replied, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved–you and your household.'"

Romans 10

"That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."

Ephesians 2

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Well, it depends on what you mean by punishment. If you mean eternal damnation, then rural_preacher has it covered. But, if you mean the punishmeents we receive for specific sins we commit, those can only be avoided by trying to avoid sin all-together and by living a pure life. (This latter has no bearing on Salvation.)

Someone has to be punished for my sins. Fortunately, Christ took my punishment and accounted his righteousness to my account. Because of my saving faith in Christ's redemptive work on the cross, I now have eternal life and peace with God.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Good post. People try to add to what a person has to do to be saved.

Those verses say nothing about being baptized or doing works as some faiths/denominations teaches. If in fact those are prerequisites then Paul would have included those in the above mentioned verses.

What does a person have to do to avoid the punishment for their sins?

I would say amen to what lambslove wrote and add this...

With that knowledge - that...

Christ took my punishment and accounted his righteousness to my account

... I would encourage you to ask a different question. Instead of asking how to avoid punishment, why not ask how your life might become a reward for Christ's suffering?

It was just a conversation starter, I have found the answer, I just wanted to offer the topic in hopes that someone might be able to learn from the experiences of those who post here:wave:

Repentence is the key to forgivness,

Amen!

So often the message of repentence is left out. Repentence means "to turn your back; to turn around and go a different direction".

Salvation is not "easy believism". So often people are told that all they have to do is believe in Jesus and everything will be fine. However, the biblical message of believing in Jesus Christ involves repentence - turning your back on sin and facing Christ. The Bible tells us to "walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh". Walking in the Spirit means not walking in sin (the flesh). We repent of one (turn away from) and walking in step with the other.

Repentence is an integral (essential, necessary) part of true saving faith. But it is all a work of God's Grace by the power of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5-7).
