My daughter was baptised this previous Sunday. During the service, they had a special singer who came in to sing three hyms.

His first was beautiful, bringing my wife to tears.
His second, after the first line, it suddenly became a chipmunk voice. He tried to soldier on for a line or two, but then stopped. The sound guy tried to sort it out, and gave the go ahead.
He started singing with gusto, only for the chipmunk voice to reappear. The microphone and music was quickly cut completely.

Instead of just stopping again, this man just continued singing. Drips and drabs the congregation joined in, and we ended up singing the hymn a cappella. It was very moving, beautifully done, and a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life. It was one of my favourite hymns to boot, the Afrikaans version of Mine Eyes have seen the Glory.

It was, in fact, better, then it would have been had the sound not malfunctioned.

Congratulations on your daughter's baptism!

I learned something new here. Before going to Wiki, I didn't know that The Battle Hymn of the Republic went by that different name, or was even much known outside the U.S.

Many years ago I first heard the English version. It was such a part of Afrikaans culture, that I thought initially that the English version was stolen from the Afrikaans, instead of the reverse.

The words are different, but the theme is still Christ's victory. The afrikaans version is called 'Die Oorwinningslied' - the Victory song.

Another Civil War era US song became the basis of another Afrikaans traditional song, 'My Sarie Marais'. We also have a traditional song telling of the coming of the CSS Alabama to Cape Town - 'Daar kom die Alibama'. It is strange how small the world actually is.
