What does having a Soul confer on a person from the Christian point of view?

Is it more that mind, self awareness, emotions, thinking, feeling..?

Is it a matter of degree... I.e. the level of intelligence, the depth of feeling..?

If a computer A.I. system got to the level of true sentience... would that be a soul?

Are animals, dogs, horses, birds, chimps in possession of a soul? If not, then what are they lacking that a soul would have given them?

I've heard it said before that our soul is what animates us. It gives us emotions, intellect, and personality. In that regard, even animals hove souls as they can also display those same characteristics. But humans are the only animals with spirits. Our spirit is what allows us to commune with God.
