Hey Gang.
I've been recently worked on the concepts of sonship vs salvation. Modern evangelicals will say that full salvation occurs when you receive the revelation that Jesus is the Christ and your spirit is birthed by God, and you'll get into Heaven when you're severed from the flesh. It is almost as if this organic relationship is one of 1's and 0's, everything pigeon-holed, and in it's place. I say that this falls far short of the plane of God's thought and spiritual desire.
We begin as toddlers, and even the slightest act or emotion will bring joy to our Father's face (if you are a parent, you'll know what I'm saying), and it doesn't matter that we are walking or talking yet, but we wouldn't want to be toddlers forever. We would expect to develop and grow into things we've never seen before in Life, into knowledge of ourselves and our Progenitor, and into the recognized authority of the Father. We expect to experience new things, and grow out of the old childlike ways. Eventually, we grow up in Him. The Father lays down rules by which we must operate, and tells us that we must have the car home by 6:30. Yes, the rules are tight, but they are for our own blessing and benefit, as His wisdom and high perspective afford. He is able to make rules that, once followed, will lead His children into a glorious and bountiful life of abundance and sound character. He hands us the keys, and we are off. We know that even at birth He loved us, and still does, and when we arrive home at 9:45 (you may replace this example with your own personal sin), we assume He will overlook this thing. The country law says that you were to be killed if you came home late, but God overcame that at your birth by getting you dual citizenship. Now, here is where the problem arises.
This is where we Christians are stuck like glue to the floor. Evangelicals approach their Father like a book. "God, you've forgiven me. It says here that I won't be killed, and that I've been set free from this rule. It also says you love me, so I can clearly presuppose that you won't punish me." God WANTS to punish us in this circumstance, and this is something I've rarely seen in modern thought. It's not that He delights in pain or punishment, but He loves the correction, the setting right, the "fulfilment of the righteous requirement of the law," and this is part of His purpose. He got rid of the constraints of the law so we could receive the Spirit of the Law, AND FULFIL THE LAW (not Mosaic but sonship laws, or moral laws).
The Spirit of the Law will fulfil the "righteous requirement of the Law." We often view our experience as getting from one experience of forgiveness to another, and lose sight that the demand upon us is to be perfect, to overcome. I believe we have been given the tools and desire to attain to such a place, and that anything short will be forgiven, yes, but more than forgiven, corrected through chastizement. What's better than being let go? "Don't worry about coming home late, that's ok, I love you." Being punished. "You ain't getting the car back until you learn. Then you can ride around all you want." You see, it's not a matter of law, but of proper growth!!
KJV Hebrews 12:6
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
NLT Hebrews 12:6
For the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes those he accepts as his children
God did not just rescue us from condemnation, He allowed us into His own corrective purposes that we might experience true sonship. If you want to be a full son, and I know I do, lets take the next step in this journey and begin to expect the punitive hand of God in our lives.
In Him,
