• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Why is it that in most cultures it is okay for a guy to go around without his shirt off?

In a world of lust and desire, girls are told to cover up to protect their brothers in Christ, but at the same time, their brothers in Christ are going around shirtless and making their sisters in Christ stare? Girls do stare too and we have the same problems with it like the guys, but it is just not as widely noticed or accepted and we cant write it off like I've heard "Guys will be Guys".

I know for me personally when a guy has his shirt off I do want to stare, I am training myself not too, but I know it is a struggle and it does make me want to be with a guy. To me, I dont need full porn just give me a guy with his shirt off and thats enough to arrouse me.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if guys know that women are also sexual beings, lols. I've seen guys walk around in their undershirts and boxers. To me, thats equvilent to a girl walking around in her bra and shorts. It's just as lustful, guys.

I think the reason we tell girls to "cover up" is because they are, on average, more vulnerable to those who want to prey on them. I don't think it has anything to do with "harmless" lust, really.

Guys are thought to be more able to resist being coerced into sex ... I guess that's where it's from.

As a guy who likes to work out and keep in shape. I admit when I do go around with my shirt off, it's because I'm comfortable doing so and pleased with the upper body I'm revealing. To be honest though I've never really given it much thought as to it making a female lust. Yes I've thought about hoping they notice how good of shape I'm in but I just haven't ever let it register they they might actually be fantasizing about me. Maybe when I was in my teens I hoped they would. I've been married 26 years now and just haven't really given it much thought, but I do make sure if I'm shirtless I look good without a shirt, so maybe I need to take a look at why I try so hard to look good. I've always tried to tell myself it's for my wife, but I think about how my body looks whenever I'm shirtless around others also, so maybe there is more to it then I've admitted before. Thank you for pointing this out, it gives me something to think about and maybe even act upon. Maybe just maybe the shirt will come off less but I'm still going to try to look good for me and the wife. What do we do when go swimming?
