  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I love writing. One of the biggest problems I have is keeping a story going. I do great with a plot, and I can do well at discriptive writing. However, when it comes to the meat, I end up running out of steam and the story dies.

My wife writes a little at a time. She loves Christian Romance. I think that is one area that Christian books have totally swamped. That and END OF DAYS books. I get so sick of walking down book aisles at Christian stores. I want something different. I love scifi, adventure, action, mystery, horror, etc. I would love to see something different in the market place. I have tried to get my wife to write a book with me, but she doesnt want to. I have also asked her to write a kids book with me, and she doesnt want to. I dont think she has the confidence. I also am VERY artistic, so illustration wouldnt be an issue. I just need to find a kindred soul with the same vision and write. Kinda like the writers from Left Behind. They fit together great.

Start jotting down ideas wherever you go. For you, sketching might be the key. What age group are you thinking?

Once you start researching the surrounding elements, the research can drive the story. Say, for instance you're writing mystery...develop your setting: the house, the dwellers, what they eat, what they drive...then things will come to you. Otherwise you have a vacuum. (I don't mean they did it with the vacuum.)

For sci fi, you might imagine a planet and its atmosphere, vegetation, inhabitants...then conflicts will form with the restrictions and possibilities.

Every person and object you bring in should have a purpose and fit tightly in with several others.

I agree, book topics are very limited these days. With so many out there, and so many "books in us," why must readers be stuck in trends?

I've heard writers say that the younger the audience, the harder it is to write...maybe because we have so many ideas in our heads, we can't cut back to simplicity.

I do hope you find a partner for writing...partners can pull you in different directions or build synergy...

If you want to illustrate book covers... lulu.com has a lot of authors who use the lulu templates, and a place for illustrators/photographers to sell graphics for the writers to use. It's a nice way to get started...let someone else solidify the ungelled areas, but still be involved in the process.
