  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Romans 6:2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
<-----> Galatians 2:19+20

There's several ways to die, some good, some bad.

Above we see a Biblical reference to dying to a life strictly based upon our own works.

And a rebirth which allows for Christ to live and work in and through us.

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. <-----> Romans 6:4

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. <-----> Romans 7:6

Without The Holy Spirit, which is Christ within, we are bound to face everything as a matter of "I this" and "I that", so that all rests upon what we can or cannot do...and because we naturally lack sufficient virtue in and of our selves - this means certain death !

But once The Spirit of The Lord is joined unto our spirit, it's no longer "I", but "He" and His Virtue which is employed and effectually enables.

Yet, once we begin to experience this miracle, we find we can still fall back into our old ways of thinking and foolishly act as if we're independent, which is why Paul proclaimed -

I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. <-----> 1st Corinthians 15:31

One common error appears to be to misjudge the beginning of this transformation as though it was the end. For as Paul indicates this commitment / This New Covenant needs to be renewed daily, it is not something we receive one day, and then from then on it's all automatically accomplished.

Good ways to die

1. Die to the law (no longer striving to assert our own righteousness)

2. Die to sin (becoming mortified against yielding to temptation)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While we are yet in our "sinful flesh/mortal bodies", we are "raised up" in our spirit by being joined together with The Lord/Holy Spirit.

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. <-----> 2nd Corinthians 3:17

... He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. <-----> 1st Corinthians 6:17

The Spirit is the "breath of life", The Holy Spirit is a "Second Breath from God".

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. <-----> Genesis 2:7

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
<-----> John 20:21+22

And we also await the raising up of our "souls" (individual selves) when Jesus returns, either by being resurrected or transformed in the twinkling of an eye (See 1st Corinthians Chapter 15), whereupon our bodies will be glorified with Christ and we will thereby be given the fullness of the Gift of immortality. At present we have only, "the earnest of our inheritance" ( Colossians 1:22 + Ephesians 1:14) - which means we have a comparatively small portion that is representative of the full amount, being reserved unto a future time of redemption.

With "The Second Breath", or Gift of The Holy Spirit, we are "raised up" by The Lord's Virtue and Character, and as long as we are yielding to Him, it is He, and not we, who is working so that God's Good and Perfect Will is accomplished.

May The Lord Be Magnified, To The Glory of The Father !

Our old man is to be reckoned dead in Christ, the old man is the old sinful nature that we inherited from Adam. The new nature is the divine spiritual nature that we inherited in Christ by believing on Him. We are to believe and trust that these things are true based on the promises of God in scripture: we are dead to sin and alive to God through Jesus Christ our Lord, because of this fact we are to offer the members of our body in service to God in righteousness instead of in our past service to the flesh and satan when we offered them to wickedness. We have been born again to a living hope in Jesus Christ, before in Adam we were born in death because of the transgressions of our fathers we were dead to God, now we are born into life (eternal) based on the merits of the cross and through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

But, is it the old dead "spirit" man that died?

The spirit that man has is dead already to God (preconversion), the spirit is what we use to contact the eternal realm that we cannot see. We can use our spirit to contact evil forces (hence: psychics, etc.), but we cannot please and honor God in a spiritual sense until we have been born again. God pronounced to man that he would die because of sin, this pronouncement of death was physical as well as spiritual, man used to walk with God (as Adam did in the Garden) but when man fell this communion was destroyed and a wall was put up because of sin. So in essence man is dead to God because of sin, the only way we can be brought back to life is through the redemption of Jesus Christ, Jesus redeems our soul from death and frees our spirit to worship and serve the living God as we were meant to.

The man that we are to reckon and account as dead is the old man of Adam, we are part of his seed and we are condemned based on the first sin of Adam and Eve. Although of course many sins have happened sense then, but the point is God condemned all future generations based on the sin of the one (or the two). The bible says: "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." (1 Cor. 15:22) The seed that Adam passed along was a seed of death (spiritual and physical) and it was also a seed that was cursed and marred with a sinful nature, this nature is what we are to reckon as dead. This nature is a result of the fall of man, the nature that Adam passed to future generations was dead to God (and "alive" in a sense to sin) because of original sin.

It is spiritual in the sense that we have received this nature from our fleshly parents by disobeying God (who is spiritual), we are born in death and must be made alive to God again through Christ.

Let me put it this way:

Before the Fall in the Garden, man was capable in a spiritual sense to choose NOT to sin. Humans had free will at this time as well and Adam could have chose to sin (which he did) but he still had the capacity to NOT sin if he desired to do so.

After the Fall, man had no capacity in a spiritual sense to keep from sinning, man was born into sin after Adam with a predisposed disposition to evil, there was and is no longer a capacity to say "no" to sin completely. The bible says: "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." (Romans 3: 10-12)

But after the eternal redemption and salvation of Jesus Christ we were brought back to our original state, we are again capable (in the power of the Holy Spirit) to NOT sin. We are to reckon the old man dead and the new man alive to righteousness and to God. We are capable in a truly spiritual sense to again say "NO" to sin. The Christian still has a choice as Adam did but the redemption is complete and we are saved based on the merits of Christ.

So the answer to your question is that the "nature" of the old man is to be seen in a spiritual aspect but only insofar as we see the physical aspect as well. The "seed" (physical) of Adam is cursed by God and marred by the rebellious sin of our ancestors, so the "Old Man" constitutes the evil desires of the flesh and the rebellious yearning of the sinful and evil man of our forefathers (which is in our members and heart, the center of our being). Again it is spiritual in the sense that our spirits are dead to God (preconversion) and spiritual in how our sinful nature rebelled against the ultimate spiritual being: God Himself. All of these things though are to be considered dead to a Christian, we are no longer bound to obey the lusts of the flesh and the evil desires of our old life and heart. We (if we belong to God) have been given a new heart and a new spirit (life) to serve God in Spirit and Truth, we are born into a living hope based on the cross and resurrection of our living Lord: Jesus Christ.

God bless and pray this will be of some help.

I learned it from study, especially studying the books of Watchman Nee ("The Spiritual Man", "The Normal Christian Life") and many others such as Hannah Whitall Smith, D.L. Moody, R.C. Sproul among others. All of these people have mentored me in my walk with the Lord, but the bible is where I find more answers than anywhere else.

Commandments of Jesus. Do you mean how He made the Law more perfect.
Hate being equal to Murder
Lust being equal to Adultery
Love your neighbor as yourself
Love God with all your........?

He made the law more perfect. Thank you.
Praise God for His law that shows us our imperfection and praise Jesus His son that saves us. We die daily because the law kills us daily, we remain sinners alive only in Christ. And as a result we live daily in Christ. We remain sinners without a record of our wrong doing being kept because we forgive others and God forgives us.

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

An old author, Jesse Penn-Lewis, talked about the death of flesh that is in rebellion. We die daily-we choose to reckon dead on the cross the flesh that brought us to choose sin. I ask God to circumcise that part of flesh that has been disobedient and I choose to obey Him. Flesh is simply that part of US that rebells into sin. My spirit man is dead just as Jesus died. Just as Jesus died I died...my dead spirit died, but my new spirit is joined with HIM and now I am a joint-heir and a co-laborer with Christ Jesus. AMEN!

Spirit cannot die. Flesh can die, and souls can die, If we continue to abuse this gift of "the spirit of life", it is then taken away, and ultimately goes back to God to be redistributed to those deemed worthy, or if thoroughly defiled may be confined to the "lake of fire" for eternity. Death of the body and/or soul are the result of the spirit of life being taken away, or confined in a state of perpetual separation from God; with there being a resurrection from the death of the body (first death), but there being no resurrection from the death of the soul (second death).

Jesus' Spirit did not die on the cross, his flesh died. In/by His Spirit He went and preached The Gospel to the "spirits in prison". And this is one of the great things Jesus demonstrated, to wit, that the spirit of life is stronger than death, or that life is stronger than death.

For God is "not a God of the dead, but of the living" and Satan is he who "has/had the power of death", as "the destroyer". And since God is stronger than Satan, the spirit of life is stronger than death. ( Mark 12:27 ; Hebrews 2:14 + Exodus 12:23)

Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
<-----> Ecclesiastes 12:6+7

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
<-----> 1st Peter 3:18+19

And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
<-----> Matthew 8:28+29

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
<-----> Matthew 25:40+41

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. <-----> Revelation 20:10

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. <-----> Matthew 10:28

Note: no mention of the spirit being destroyed.

We are comprised of three - body, soul, spirit.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. <-----> 1st Thessalonians 5:23

The wages of sin is the death of the body. The price for rejecting The Gospel of Christ is the death of the soul. But there's no mention (far as I can tell) of the spirit ever dying.

Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. <-----> Revelation 20:6

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
<-----> Revelation 20:14+15

Note: the "second death" is accomplished by "being cast into the lake of fire", yet in Revelation 20:10 above we see that the devil and those tied to him are "tormented day and night for ever and ever", in this very same "lake of fire". Wherefore, though both body and soul is killed by that punishment, the spirit lives on in everlasting torment, because spirit cannot die.

Least that's how Scripture speaks to this body, soul, spirit.

May The Lord Be Magnified !

Your right WM the spirit of man cannot die, but the spirit of man is dead to God before salvation.

Dead in the sense of "lacking power" or "having grown cold".

But not altogether dead because, as it is written -

Yet had he the residue of the spirit. <---> From Malachi 2:15

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; <-----> Titus 3:5

The Holy Ghost is The Spirit of Life.

Every living thing has a measure of God's Spirit, for that is what makes it alive.

Note Titus 3:5 above - The internal mechanics of our Salvation is that God "washes", through "regeneration" and "renewing" of His Holy Spirit.

Stating that The Spirit is "regenerated" and "renewed", indicates that The Spirit is already present within a person before Salvation, only in an insufficient manner or amount for Salvation.

This can be likened unto a battery which has an initial, relatively "weak" charge which slowly dissipates until the battery is completely dead, unless it can somehow be connected/reconnected to a "Charger".

Yet, even though the battery is practically dead/dying the dissipating "charge" or energy is not destroyed, but rather it lodges elsewhere, in another form.

For apparently, energy cannot be destroyed, only transformed.

Which is indicative/representative that the spirit/Spirit cannot be destroyed, but will transform, either the vessel it presently occupies, or possibly another "more willing one".

Least that's how it appears at this stage of perceiving the invisible.

May The Lord Be Pleased !

Yes men are born dead to God. Praise be to Jesus for giving us a new spirit. We are now partakers of His divine spirit. We are joined together. Now I am alive and born again in Christ Jesus.

Dead in the sense of "lacking power" or "having grown cold".

I see the unregenerate spirit of man more in the view of being cut-off, separate, condemned and alienated from the life of God (Who is life itself in the truest sense).

But I do agree that the spirit we have definently at one point came from God and it was "good", this spirit though that God gave us, "the breath of life" was corrupted to the point of death (spiritually) after the first sin of man.

Being cut off from the source of life (God) means that although the spirit is still alive in some way it is basically dead and condemned in the sight of God. A spirit in this state can expect nothing but the wrath of God untill he/she repents and is born again into new life.

"And he said to me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, you know." (Ezekiel 37:3)

The spirit of man is not completely cut off from God, for if that were the case, he/we would instantly cease to exist, as anything/anyone with any life/opportunity left.

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. <-----> Ecclesiastes 9:4

Not that there's hope outside of Christ, but that, if one is yet physically alive, there is yet hope they may yet be drawn to Jesus, and be saved.

This is allowed for by the longsuffering of God; for even though the verdict of death came suddenly once man/woman sinned, because the provision of Christ's Atonement was decreed even prior to that verdict, man/woman did not instantly perish.

For as much as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
<-----> 1st Peter 1:18-20

And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation...<---> 2nd Peter 3:15

Furthermore, man's spirit was made good/very good.

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.... <---> Genesis 1:31

It was/is only when man's spirit is mingled or merged with the devil/the unclean spirits pertaining to his forces, that man's spirit becomes defiled and stricken - in need of being cleansed and renewed or regenerated.

And this is what occurs (the washing and renewing), when our spirit is linked to Christ's Spirit through believing His Testimony, whether through Scripture or preaching, or being convicted in our conscience by God's witnesses. Faith in Jesus, The Personification of God The Father, does invite The Holy Spirit to come to our rescue !

And if we cooperate, we will be remade into exactly what we need to be to be welcomed with open arms into God's Everlasting Kingdom, where there is no more sorrow, pain, or death, (without the use of pharmaceuticals or cryogenics!)

Yea !!
