  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's "Let the Children come unto me" or Babywise, not sure, it's a French translation. 98% of what I heard/read about the Ezzos has been negative so I wasn't too thrilled with receiving this book. I flipped through it and since it promotes crying to sleep, I know it's not for me.

But I can't help but wonder about their technique of nursing/playtime/sleep. Does it work? Is it good? Can it be done without CIO? And can babies be made to have such a good routine?

I don't mind Zac not having much of a routine right now because he is my only child, but will a strict routine be necessary when I have my next children?

A strict routine was not needed for us. We have a general schedule and that give the kids the predictability they need in their day.

I have not read the book you have. I was given several copies of Ezzo's GKGW. I didn't keep them and wasn't comfortable passing them on to others.

The Ezzos offer very little room for compromise - all their way or you are not parenting as God intended! Plus, they have misused Scripture to make their point! How can they be trusted if they will do this? (The have contended that Jesus crying out 'My God, why have you forsaken me!' from the cross is a model of the parent child relationship - in a Christian family, children will feel abandoned if you are parenting correctly.) ?!?

Do not give the book away, do not return it for money. Destroy it!

This part made me laugh, I can just see myself ripping into it! :D

Their interpretation of Jesus on the Cross is insane!

I read on a website a moment ago that their two adult daughters do not even speak to them anymore, I think this speaks loudly about their method.

wow a french translation... lol.... I didn't know they had those....

well apart from the obvious Ezzo doesn't have a good reputation problem.... we could talk about babies and routines...

To start, on the practical side, would it really make sense to give your 5 month old (he is 5 months right?) so many naps? Can you imagine? By 5 months, Maya took two naps and slept through the night. She ate more times than she slept, you know?

As far as Ezzo's books, I have read the Babywise series, which is secular so there's no Bible stuff in them..... and I don't know about the Bible stuff....

I destroyed mine and I am a huge bookworm. It portrayed volumes to my daughter to see me destroy a book. Both of them were shredded and used as animal bedding.

The feed/play/sleep thing is against nature also... It's normal for a nursing baby to feed and then sleep. That's the way the Hormones Work~ the hormones in the breastmilk promote sleep! So Forcing a baby to stay awake and play until a prescribed time, then putting the baby fully awake down in the crib to "take a nap" and letting the baby scream (with NO contact from mom or dad) until he/she falls asleep is completely against our instincts and the way G-d intended (IMO).

I had friends who used the Ezzo materials 100%. They even Taught the Classes (before they ever even got Pregnant the first time ) They were so cold & detached towards their babies... It saddened me beyond words. :( I'm actually surprised they didn't run into the typical problems that 100% Ezzo parents run into (dehydrated infants, low milk supply, clinically depressed toddlers, eating disorders in older children.... etc.)

I read Babywise before I gave birth... it all seemed jolly sensible, i like routine :)

Day 3 of being a Mother, the book went in the bin!!!!

I think you can have routines without CIO and stress, I started some sort of routine/sleep training at 6 mths, but did not CIO. If you want a gentler routine book try BabyWhisperer.

Oooh, you just gave me a great idea! Zac is loving to rip paper up these days, he will love it! ^_^

Zac is 7.5 months, it's going fast, hey? ;) And he does sleep many times, but nothing like the Ezzo say. He takes short naps, max one hour many times a day.

Eek, but then he might grab other books off your shelf and rip them too? :o We emphasize nice treatment of books from day 1. :)

Oh wow.... that's different... both of my kids took a couple months before they settled down into a 3 nap routine and then dropped the 3rd nap after a while.... it was natural, but I agree with charligirl that you can have a routine without needing to cry it out. I think it must come naturally to me, we have a flow to our day.... we eat lunch at 11.... Maya takes her nap at noon.... snack at 2... we tidy up the toys and vacuum in the late afternoon.... its just what we do, and I never had to make that happen. So I guess you notice, she eats and then sleeps, however I don't feed her to sleep either. I always give her one last meal/snack right before bed at night too... after all, I want her to sleep the whole time and not wake up hungry....

I've never read anything by Ezzo, but I've heard a lot of bad stuff about him.

Anyway, we have a sort of routine...the main thing we stick to is nap time because Benjamin gets a bit growly and upset if he's overtired (I guess that's entirely normal though). We organise our day around lunchtime and nap time so that he has something regular going on each day. We might go out in the morning, but generally make sure we're back by 12 for lunch. Then he sleeps for a couple of hours, and then do whatever we're doing for the afternoon, before dinner and bed.

We've never had to let him CIO to achieve this, and I personally don't believe in letting children CIO. I think you kind of naturally get into a routine after a while, without having to 'enforce' it.

I have a couple Babywise books on my shelf. I've read them and used some stuff in there, especially with my son who was a difficult baby for me to deal with. Sure, there is a some controversy in there as in all parenting books, but I seriously did not see a need to be so violently against them:scratch:. They are certainly not my favorite books or anything. I read them the same way I read other parenting books - use what you like and what makes sense and ignore the rest.

Thought you might like this:

From the website.

For those of you who are thinking about using the Babywise techniques, I URGE you to do some reading first...Considering that most professionals in the pediatric, breastfeeding and child development communities vehemently oppose Ezzo's methods, going into this program uneducated on the subject is very unwise.

I guess for me it's the total lack of respect for children and their unique needs and instincts and the really horrific theology they use - so obviously in at attempt to guilt people into doing it "God's way". Rather loaded words . . .
