Hi everyone. I have a number of questions about the Seventh Day Adventist Church. If you all could help me out by answering these questions, I would greatly appreciate it. Here are the questions:

  1. I am planning to attend a Seventh Day Adventist Church service this morning. What should I wear? Should I wear a dress or is pants and a t-shirt ok?
  2. How often do you celebrate The Lord's Supper?
  3. Do you use wine or grape juice during The Lord's Supper?
  4. What do you believe about The Lord's Supper? Is it symbolic or is Jesus really, truly, and physically present or do you believe something else?
  5. Why do you observe the Old Testament sabbath instead of the New Testament Lord's Day? I am not looking to debate here. I just can't figure this out myself.
  6. What do you believe about smoking tobacco?
  7. What do you believe about drinking alcohol even if you don't get drunk?
  8. Is it true that you have a dietary law that all Seventh Day Adventists must follow?
Anyway, that's all the questions that I have for now. Thanks in advance and God bless! :)

I'm not SDA but I have been to an Adventist church for a few months and know many of the members. Don't take my word as the absolute rule but I can answer some of this.

1. You should dress modestly as you would any time you enter the Lord's house. I personally don't believe in wearing t-shirts in church but nobody is going to kick you out if you do.

2. I know the church here celebrates it quarterly and they use grape juice as the church does not believe in drinking alcohol. Communion is more symbolic versus what we Orthodox believe which is the real presence.

3. As far as the Sabbath goes the church follows it because it's one of the ten commandments. There's also other doctrinal issues behind it but it's an issue that you can spend hours discussing.

4. I know that the SDA church strongly discourages tobacco use and they host many smoking cessation classes, health classes, etc. In general they try to promote a healthy life style.

5. The only dietary laws that I'm aware of are the same as the OT dietary laws. A lot of SDAs are also vegan but it's not mandatory.

Hope this helps, and if I'm wrong somebody correct me. :)

Too late to answer this question, I'm sure--lol.

  1. How often do you celebrate The Lord's Supper?
Usually quarterly, but each local church may vary.

  1. Do you use wine or grape juice during The Lord's Supper?
Unfermented grape juice of course. If the bread must have no leaven, neither should the 'wine'.

  1. What do you believe about The Lord's Supper? Is it symbolic or is Jesus really, truly, and physically present or do you believe something else?
It's purely symbolic. There is no scriptural support for it being literal, especially since the Eternal forbids cannibalism.

  1. Why do you observe the Old Testament sabbath instead of the New Testament Lord's Day? I am not looking to debate here. I just can't figure this out myself.
Again, there is no scripture in the whole of the bible saying that the "Lord's Day is Sunday. There is no NT, 'Sabbath Day'. The Eternal does not change, His holy day remains the 7th day of the week, not the first.

  1. What do you believe about smoking tobacco?
Smoking is an unnecessary evil practice that destroys the mind and body of those addicted to the drug, nicotine contained in tobacco. In times past, no one smoking was baptized into the SDA church. However, today, with the liberals taking over, this is no longer the case; much to our chagrin.

  1. What do you believe about drinking alcohol even if you don't get drunk?
The same sentiment applies to the consumption of alcohol. It is totally unnecessary and in far too many cases, has destroyed not only the addict to alcohol, but his/her entire family. Drinking alcohol is not permitted in the SDA church.

  1. Is it true that you have a dietary law that all Seventh Day Adventists must follow?
The Almighty, in His love and parental caring for His children, has informed us as to what may be safely eaten and what will harm us if we eat it. Since our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, followed those health rules, then we, as professed followers of His, should then do the same.

I hope these answers have been helpful. If you have any more questions about the beliefs of the SDA church, please, feel free to ask.

PS--rofl--I have no idea why all of your questions in the above series all turned to '1's' when I posted them--lol.. Oh well--

Thanks to both of you. Your answers were very helpful. I went to the Seventh Day Adventist Church this morning and I really liked it. I accidentally locked my keys in my car. Thankfully I realized this before I got the door completely shut and the door was halfway open. A guy who had just pulled in to the church used a hanger and got my car open after several unsuccessful attempts praise be to God!:bow: Anyway, I am going to go back next Saturday. :)

Here are some more questions. This time I'll use bullets instead of numbers so you don't have that same problem as you did before. ;):D

  • What does the Seventh Day Adventist Church teach about the rapture? Will there be people left behind such as in the Left Behind book series?
  • Does the Seventh Day Adventist Church believe in annihilationism when it comes to Hell?
  • What exactly are the dietary laws of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and are they found in the Bible?
  • Does the Seventh Day Adventist Church believe in allowing women to be preachers/pastors?
  • Can you lose your salvation according to Seventh Day Adventist teaching? If so, how easy is it to lose your salvation?
Thanks!

Thanks--lol--that sure was weird. And glad to hear you liked your first experience at an SDA church.

  • What does the Seventh Day Adventist Church teach about the rapture? Will there be people left behind such as in the Left Behind book series?
Wow--now you are going deep--lol. We believe that the so called 'rapture' IS the second coming of Christ when He comes to get His own. There is no one left alive at this time. The wicked die at His presence, but will be resurrected in the 'second resurrection'.

  • Does the Seventh Day Adventist Church believe in annihilationism when it comes to Hell?
Yes. The wages of sin is DEATH, not life in another place.

  • What exactly are the dietary laws of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and are they found in the Bible?
We go by the 'clean and unclean' foods who's description is found in Lev. 11. But the unclean foods actually began before that and before there ever was a Jewish nation. See...Ge 7:2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
Ge 7:8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
Ge 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

  • Does the Seventh Day Adventist Church believe in allowing women to be preachers/pastors?
Preachers yes, pastors no. This is the traditional position of the SDA church. But like a lot of other churches, some liberal SDA's are currently allowing it women to be pastors and elders. Many of us disapprove of this unbiblical position.

  • Can you lose your salvation according to Seventh Day Adventist teaching? If so, how easy is it to lose your salvation?
You cannot lose your salvation unwilling. You can however, give it away. The Eternal does not force salvation on any. But we can certainly grieve away the Holy Spirit by our CONTINUAL, HABITUAL refusal to walk IN Christs ways. Many places in scripture we see people being admonished to not have their names removed from the book of life for disobedience.

Again, I hope these answers helped you. I have kept them brief, although there are many scriptures I could give you if at any point you want to delve deeper. Thanks again for asking.

  • What does the Seventh Day Adventist Church teach about the rapture? Will there be people left behind such as in the Left Behind book series?
The SDA's believe in a visible, glorious and audible return oif the King of Kings and as such dismiss the "secret rapture" doctrine.
  • Does the Seventh Day Adventist Church believe in annihilationism when it comes to Hell?
Yes.
  • What exactly are the dietary laws of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and are they found in the Bible?
Adventist believe that the only laws removed from observance in the Torah are the ceremonial laws and rituals that pointed to Jesus' first advent. Thus they, for the most part, adhere to the distinction of eating only "clean" meats.
  • Does the Seventh Day Adventist Church believe in allowing women to be preachers/pastors?
No.

Can you lose your salvation according to Seventh Day Adventist teaching? If so, how easy is it to lose your salvation?

Yes. Adventists do not subscribe to "once saved always saved." I think it would be inappropriate to "guess" how easy it is to lose one's salvation. God knows.

Here's this from Amazing Facts that should help out.

Anything-But-Secret

  • Do Seventh Day Adventists still follow the cleanliness laws of Leviticus and such?

Regarding food and such? Most, not all.

  • Can more people than just Seventh Day Adventists go to Heaven or is Heaven restricted to Seventh Day Adventists only?
Anyway, that's all the questions I have for now. Thanks!

SDA's don't believe or teach that they are the only saved Christians. Such a teaching is inconsistent with SDA doctrine.

Welcome to the family of SDA Christians worldwide Cheez-it. I have been a SDA Christian for 11 years and what a beautiful journey it has been. The biblical truths you will learn and experience are beyond measure to anything you may have already heard or experienced. My fiance will also be getting baptised soon and has come from a hindu background and she is amazed at the truths she has learned and is now equipped to tackle this sinful world head on by the grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. All of heaven rejoices as with us when even one soul finds its way to the Giver and Sustainer of life. God bless and you are at the right place for all your questions to be answered.

What exactly is this "secret rapture" that I hear about that SDA's do not believe in? I am a former Catholic and so I don't understand these things very well.

A Catholic priest came up with the idea of the secret rapture back in the day. It's the view that all those that are who are saved with be secretly taken to heaven, thus avoiding a seven year tribulation before the real Second Coming. The downside to this pre-tribulation belief is - if its not correct - you won't be expecting the tribulation, and probably will be deceived (Mark of the Beast anyone?).

Hmmm ok. I didn't know that a Catholic priest came up with the idea of the secret rapture. That seems rather odd to me because Catholicism is officially amillennial. But I'll take your word for it anyway. :)
