I picked up Yancy's The Bible Jesus Read the other day. It's simply outstanding. I've only read the first two chapters so far, but I can tell that the others are likewise going to make an impact on me. I haven't always loved the Old Testament, just like Yancy hadn't. Lately, I've been spending a lot of time in it, though. This book is only helping to further broaden my horizons in that regard.

If anyone here hasn't read it and wants to, just let me know. I'll mail it to you when I'm done with it.

I think so. I have read the one on What is a Reformed Church. The books are meant for people who want to learn more about their faith, but don't have the time for serious theological study. They are also written to a level that you could give to a friend who is interested in an overview of the Calvinist/Reformed faith. They are a good series.

The Five Points of Calvinism
by
Horatius Bonar

John Calvin
Jonathon Edwards
John Gill
Thomas Goodwin
Jay Green, Sr.

Thirty years ago this book in its present format was published, and it received such a warm reception that it has since been reprinted more than once. This should not be surprising since there are articles by six famous authors never before brought together in one book.

Jay P. Green, Sr. is the founder of Sovereign Grace Publishers. His 50-page article, Calvinism, is from The Encyclopedia of Christianity, Volume II, 1968.

Horatius Bonar (1809-1899) was a popular Presbyterian minister, author in the nineteenth century. Bonar has authored numerous books. His article is an overview of the Five Points of Calvinism written in the form of letters to a young man.

Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was a Baptist preacher who not only served his local church, but also pioneered foreign missions (he raised funds for William Carey to go to India as a missionary). This article on Depravity is from Fuller's Works. It also is written in the form of letters.

John Calvin (1509-1564), of course, is the famed Swiss theologian whose name spawned the term Calvinism. Calvin's article on Unconditional Election is from a sermon on Ephesians 1:3, 4. Despite some who seek to turn readers away from Calvin, he is one of the easiest to read, and free of any form of wresting the Scriptures of any.

John Gill (1697-1771) is the noted Baptist preacher, linguist, and theologian. Gill's article on Unlimited Atonement is from his masterwork on theology, A Body of Divinity. Gill is known for his brevity because he links Scripture after Scripture with only a few remarks of his own to explain their connection with the subject.

Thomas Goodwin (1600-1679) is the famous Puritan expositor whose ability to expound a single verse so as to include proof of the subject in hand. This article on Irresistible Grace is an exposition of Ephesians 1:19, in which Goodwin shows that the power that regenerates the believer is the same power that was exercised to raise Christ from the dead. God’s power joined to His will is both efficient and sufficient to accomplish anything He pleases. And He pleases to convert whom He will, even those who are most resistant to that will.

Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is the most famed and revered of all the American theologians. This article on The Perseverance of the Saints (also known as The Preservation of the Saints) is from a sermon Edwards preached. It is so closely reasoned that one might wonder that he can cover this subject in such a short space.
