  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I watched this movie on Netflix and was actually pleasantly surprised with it. I was cautious because it had an R-rating, but the movie had no sexual content and the language was typical of movies with PG-13 ratings or less. I guess that the rating may have come from some of the violence in the movie, but I also thought it was tamer than some PG-13 movies. The story is from Robert E. Howard (author of Conan books) and is about a pirate/brigand who changes from his violent ways because the devil is after his soul. This is a sword and sorcery type movie, but I like the theme of redemption in the movie. Anybody else seen it and have any thoughts to share?

I finally was able to see Solomon Kane when it was released on Region 1 DVD earlier this year. I was a bit disappointed that more material from the original stories was not incorporated into the movies. However, I was impressed that they were able to capture the essence of the character as written by Howard.

I would recommend to anyone who has seen the film, or is just interested in the character, to take the time to read the stories. They are currently in a single collection from Del Rey Press, or can be found online by just doing a simple google search.

xFrealazoidx, you might want to re-think your position on the rating system. I know of several films, including The Wild Bunch, which were released, originally, with an 'PG' rating. When the owners of the film looked at re-releasing it in theaters last year, they were informed that it would be receiving an 'R' rating, or with edits, a 'PG-13' rating.

Returning to the original subject. The film was a surprising mix of fantasy and semi-historical material. I did enjoy the blending of fantasy and reality in order to create a setting that settled into a realistic historical feel, with hints of the weird and supernatural.
Finally, as you can tell by my user name, I am a fan of both the character and Robert E. Howard's writing in general.
