  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I noticed there are no threads on the front page of this forum about it, so why not make one?

Who is going to be in a position to see it?

Also, how do the flat earthers explain it?
I honestly don't see the big deal about it. Yeah, it's a once in a lifetime thing but it's something that can potentially make you blind. Think I'll pass.

In 1979 I watched the peak time of that one with a welders helmet on. This one I'll take in the experience of the darker than normal time period but not look up at it. The peak here is around 2:30 or so in the afternoon.

Me, kinda. 85%-ish.

Now the flat-earthers input would be interesting.

Can I look at the eclipse safely for a fraction of a second?

At totality you can. But otherwise, no. The best way to look at it is to make a pinhole camera.

We didn't get glasses so we are making solar viewers with boxes.

I will(!) be 139 when the next total eclipse in Britain comes around. Although we will have a very large partial eclipse rather sooner than that, in 2026.

Though it'll be 80% here in TX, in 2024 we get totality. So no rushing about for me.

Elipses have a deep occult and (in general) spiritul meaning around the world.

When one happens, it IS a big deal, and not because of its alleged astronomical rarity. It is usually a harbinger of something to come.

I think a solar eclipse harbinger of something that affects the world, but it is interesting that it is going over seven cities named Salem, and essentially over the diagonal of the US (a 3000 mile trip over the US alone). When considering what the world Salem means, and what it is - it is interesting indeed.

But, I am not going to watch it. In fact, I am going to stay away from people tomorrow as best as I can. :cyclone: :aquarius::eyes:

If I was a flat earther that believed the earth/terra firma was a 2-manifold covered by a hemispherical dome, then I would say eclipses still come from a spheroid geometry, and their projection therefore will be the same as we see today (assuming the earth is a ball, not a manifold.) Both the manifold (flat) and the hemispherical dome (also technically flat with a perceived 3-dimensional mapping of space) are the same geometry.

What I meant was, we get 80% NOW, and 100% in 2024

I think it was something like 87% we had in 2015, and although it briefly looked like it might do about half an hour before sunset, it was still a bit of a damp squib.
