I have heard Arthur Carl Piepkorn, a professor at Concordia St. Louis Seminary pre-SEMINEX, taught this to his students.
EDIT: Whoops...I have misattributed this statement. This is not a quote of Arthur Carl Piepkorn. I have a reference that attributes the quote to Peter Brunner, a confessional Lutheran theologian.

Yes, many do--although I would speculate that for orthodox Lutherans theologically the leap to Eastern church is fairly minimal whereas the leap to Rome is more difficult as there are dogmatic obstacles there which are not present when looking East.
