  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sola Scriptura is overrated, the first christians didn't need it so neither do we.

Actually, the Bereans were complemented for checking what the apostles said against existing scripture.

I think there;s a misunderstanding that the original early church was pristine in theology
It actually had a fair amount of confusion to sort out and believers should have been reminded to 'build their house on the rock' of God's word

Acts 20:32
And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

The Bereans were complimented because they did not yet have the Holy Spirit, Christians have more ways of checking. Good verse, the word of his grace, kind of like the phrase law of kindness in the old testament.

This point of yours is worth a special notice IMO. The posts written by people claiming that alleged traditions supposedly originated, "full grown," only days after the first Pentecost are just that--talk.

Those who tell us that "traditions" are equal to Scripture MUST argue that they were there from the start or else admit that what they have in mind is not Apostolic and not from the beginning of the Church, which would make them inauthentic. But they don't know of any such traditions, anyway. It's just theory.

All the controversial additions to Scripture--the Marian doctrines, Transubstantiation, Purgatory, Limbo, Papal Supremacy, etc.--originated at a much later time.

@davidcrosby - It is common for itching ears to want their interpretation to be presented as "Sola Scriptura" this is why it is no longer needed. We are capable of so much more, we have the mind of Christ, why not use it?

Because the mind of Christ, when it comes to what it is expected of us, is known to us only because there IS Scripture. Imagine what our perception of the mind of Christ would be if we all started putting the seal of approval on every legend, myth, guess, and fond hope that anyone could come up with while thinking about him.

@Albion - I have a little more faith in God to lead us into all truth than that. However, since all the bibles have not been burned, we can still make use of scripture. I just see it as temporary however, since nothing can separate us from the love of christ according to scripture .... and all books could be incinerated through some vast scheme in the future ... it is useful, but not permanent.

Therefore many of them believed ( Act 17:12 )

Why? Because they searched the scriptures and saw that it was so. They saw the scriptures were confirming. And yes, I agree we do need the Holy Spirit.

Joh 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (how does he say it to us?)

1Co 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

As far as the Pharisees goes, they made the Law their god, instead of God their law. (one for tradition)
And no, we are no longer under the Law. But in pertaining to the indwelling Holy Spirit. The outward observance of the Law is fulfilled (Rom 13:10) by the inner intentions of God in us (Rom 8:4) because of Romans 5:5.

The Law is an expression of God's rightiousness with His consistent characteristics of the indwelling Holy Spirit—whereby it is not bondage of the Law to keep from doing wrong, but freedom in Christ desiring to do right. Otherwise, we no longer have to work for our rightiousness (as by the Law). Instead we do rightious works (as by Christ). Christ is our rightiousness (1Cor 1:30), and we rest in Him (Heb 4:3,10). We now rest in Christ as He is our sabbath (rest) in fulfilling the Law (Eze 20:12 (ie. Rom 15:16; 1 Cor 6:11)). So yes, the Holy Spirit is the determining factor.

Scripture speaks to everyone who follow the spirit. Jesus said whoever loves him loves his word. Naturally that seems logical as well. The signs and wonders though, that's a different story. The enemy will deceive many with signs and wonders.

I'm with you on that. It's just the false miracles that make the wonders. Don't get me wrong, nothing is beyond God with miracles. Like His word says, it's a simple matter in His sight (1Chr 17:17; 2Kig 3:18; 2Chr 14:11).

It sounds like you think each person receives an adequate amount of personal revelation directly from the Holy Spirit and so doesn't have the need for either Tradition or Scripture, and that those were necessary only to get the young church established. I couldn't agree to that view myself, but I don't suppose we need to go further into it here and now.

Would you agree that those signs and wonders teach us to not agree with scripture? Michael seems to imply he is a prophet who doesn't need scripture.

@W2L - Jesus also taught the Brood of Vipers on a regular basis that God Desires Mercy, Not Sacrifice when being confronted with "it is written" . The basis of compassionate action does not need a theology, it just needs a human heart that has been set free by the truth, in which Jesus said .. I am the truth.

I didn't get that Michael thinks of himself as a prophet, W2L, but just that the Holy Spirit guides each believer's understanding.

How that could happen without the person knowing the Scriptures sufficiently to be led into the correct understanding escapes me, but that's probably a topic for another thread.
