But have you looked at Krita lately? I had not used it for a while, and then, I installed it again yesterday. They have really been working on it. It looks very sophisticated.... but the html color selector does not seem to be easy.

Free Launch Bar (makes the quickstart menu nestable without doing too much)
SQLyog community edition (to fiddle with mysql database stuff, much faster than using a web interface)
BitKinex (very very good and free FTP client)

there's more, there's always more.. but those three I definately would not want to miss. Thunderbird has been mentioned already, that's a must, too. speaking of that, I also wouldn't be able to live without the IMAP protocol for email :p

Office: LibreOffice - it use to be OpenOffice but when Oracle took over most developers moved out and formed LibreOffice, wise move :)

Web: Firefox (7 and 10), Uzbl and xxxterm for browsing, Bluefish for web development, gftp for FTP and Liferia for RSS feeds

Multimedia: Mplayer and mpd/ncmpcpp

Games: Sauerbraten - I need to frag on a daily basis :)

All of the stuff listed above is open source and free to use - most is available for Windows too!

I've been using Thunderbird since I got a computer in 2005~when I got a mac I kept using it...sometimes think of trying out Mail but Tbird does work very well:cool:

@EphesiaNZ: thanks for your tips on Scribus and Sauerbraten. I put the former on my Ubuntu box and the latter on my MacBook Pro. I've never been much of a gamer, but I've been considering looking into it for relaxation.

Hey, no problem!

I'm not sure if Sauerbraten is classed as relaxation but I sure find it fun and a stress reliever :)
