It wouldn't surprise me if I was the only person on this board who loves Social D, but I just picked up their new album today (after waiting 8 years since the last one) and I LOVE this cd.

For those who don't know, Social D is a punk rock/rockabilly band out of Orange County (california) that has been around since the 80s. I used to live not too far from the lead singer's (mike ness) house in Costa Mesa...

The biggest hit of theirs is "Ball and Chain" which I am sure all of you have heard at some point on the radio... but it is by far not their best song... I have all of their albums, and they're all great... Their latest though (Sex, Love, and Rock 'n' Roll) is outstanding!

Any other Social D / Mike Ness fans on this board by any small chance?

I think for 'first timers' their new one is actually really good... It's called "Sex, Love, and Rock 'n' Roll"

But also their self-titled one is really good and the most popular... If you want a more raw/punk sound, then I'd go with "White Light, White Heat, White Trash"

Mike Ness is a good ole' Orange County boy, still lives in Costa Mesa, has a vintage '54 chevy....

If you go out and pick one up, let me know what you think! Since I left Cali I haven't met many people that have even heard of them... (even though I know you are in San Diego)

w00t! I could send ya a few mp3s if you wanted to see if you really did like em... I've found you either love em or hate em... but it seems like most people who are into rock/punk, especially old school of each really like em.

It's weird, I do know a lot about Social D... I just found when I started listening to their music, they sing a lot about life. Hard times, break ups, love, drugs, finding yourself etc... and I connected with a lot of the lyrics, so I quickly became a huge fan.

I was bummed when I heard that this could be their last album! I guess all good things have to come to an end though... and if this is their last CD, then it's a good one to go out on, IMO

I am also a big Mike Ness fan... and I have his solo stuff, so hopefully he will put a few more solo ones out too... I like the country/old school rock feel he put on "Cheating at Solitaire"

Well all of the songs I sent you were all from different cd's... so any cd of theirs you pick up, you will like...

If you want a really good live one, be sure to get their "Live at the Roxy" ... it's got all of their really good songs on it, and they are great live.

I know I'll be listening to a lot of Social D on my 4 day drive to Texas!

One of my favorite bands. The local alt. rock station in my area used to play them a lot when the station first hit the air in late 2000, but then Social D kinda got shuffled into the Sunday night old school slot (of course, both of the DJs that host/hosted the program - I'm not quite sure if they still are - were big fans, so there was almost always one or two songs that got fit into that three hours every week), and they also get played a lot when the station hosts all-old school weekends.

I wish I had some of their albums. I've got several of their songs (I even edited a video to "1945"; I'm currently remastering that vid right now). 1945, Ball and Chain, Bad Luck, Another State Of Mind...I could name more if it wasn't for the fact I'm on a public computer.

I'll definitely check the new album out, though. I'd heard about it a month ago or so, when one of the songs from it was going up against Green Day for which one would get airplay on that station I mentioned before (Green Day won, unfortunately, and I hadn't gotten to hear the Social D song).

Dang, Well obviously the sold out band is ALWAYS going to win ;) seems nobody has room for a decent punk band but yet they save all this coverage for poppy wannabe punk..Its just so sad... :(

It wasn't really the station officials that made the decision (well, in a way). They played both songs and had the listeners call in and vote (there were loads of people saying they couldn't decide or were voting for both). From what I understand, Green Day only won by a hair. I haven't been listening much lately, so I dunno if they put Social D into rotation despite that (the DJs probably would play them anyway).

I love Social D but don't praise them at Green Day's expense. To their credit they put out a fantastic album in American Idiot. Honestly this whole "sell-out" "wanna be punk" stuff gets tiresome after a while. I used to think like that but then I realized that not only was I limiting myself from good bands that play a poppier style but that at the end of the day I too would sign a record contract if I could get paid enough money to live comfortably. Green Day have always put out records that THEY wanted to create, and have taken chances with a lot of their stuff (see Warning) which to me is the essence of being punk (not caring about what other people think). They grew up in the punk scene and one of them was basically homeless for a time, so who are we to judge?

I agree with you 100%... The only time I would ever call a band a sellout is if they create music that they hate, for the sole purpose of selling records... If the band makes the music that they love, no matter how it is categorized... It's fine in my book...
