So when was the last time you sacrificed a goat?

I'm still listening through the law books in the bible currently, and noticed that the animal offerings are a big part of the law.

Since the sacrifices are now figurative, through the way we live our lives in Christ, perhaps the sabbath has also been made figurative.

Another food for thought thread, feel free to discuss why/why not.

Can you please explain what you mean by "the sacrifices are now figurative"? Do you have an interpretation or way of understanding the sacrifices that shows they were meant to be symbolic instead of physical in meaning?

A good example is the beginning of Romans 12 regarding the living sacrifice.

That's a good thing to do, listening to/studying the law.

Psalm 19
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple (like me).

It helps, the whole bible goes on auto repeat. MP3 bibles are for sale online.

So then, if you yourself are the goat, when did you sacrifice yourself for the Son so that he might celebrate with his friends? Surely you have one little kid-goat to offer up for your elder brother who never broke any of the Father's commandments? Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. :D

Because the image displays a scripture verse?

Come on Michael. My post was clear enough for you to not try to cloud its appeal with this type of innuendo.

We disagree regarding what the scripture says. I opt to not engage in a debate of rhetoric so that the cross is not emptied of its power.

Pointless. Misuse of Scripture. Nothing here.

Am I? Most often the goat is used for a sin offering.

One goat for a sin offering:

Luke 11:1-4 ASV
1 And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, that when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, even as John also taught his disciples.
2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins; for we ourselves also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And bring us not into temptation.

Well I did start experiencing an extreme manifestation of sharing in the sufferings of Christ over a decade ago, so unsure how to respond.

Blessings.

To be honest, neither do I.

Also, I doubt the city government would appreciate anyone sacrificing goats at the petting zoo.
Muslims still do this every year on Eid al-Adha to commemorate the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son and it's a time where Muslims seek forgiveness from their sins to God. this sacrifice happens across the world wherever there are Muslims, they don't go to petting zoos but's it's going whether you see it or not.

The sacrifices God now desires are: a repentant heart, praise, giving, and our bodies.

Im sure I missed something, but Im glad Im no longer required to sacrifice goats… I dont even know where I could get a goat around here!

Indeed. The Eastern Orthodox liturgy features a beautiful hymn entitled “a mercy of peace, a sacrifice of praise,” and the ancient Eucharistic liturgies of the Eastern churches (Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Assyrian) tend to refer to themselves as being the offering of what best translates from Greek and Syriac into English as “a bloodless and rational sacrifice.” The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom features the memorable phrase “Thine own of thine own, we offer unto Thee, on behalf of all and for all,” which is sung aloud by the Priest after the consecration of the Holy Communion.

Yes, that was an amusing film. It is not well known in the US that the producer of the film (well, co producer along with his wife) Tom Hanks himself converted to Greek Orthodoxy under similar circumstances, and is fairly devout.

What's really neat about the Orthodox church is that it's like walking back in time 2,000 years to the time of the Apostles, when they created these services. You walk into that and it's really like... living it. They have maintained the truth ever since the beginning.

We were in the middle of our catechism class when the movie came out 20 years ago. When we saw it, I recognized that it is VERY accurate when it comes to Greek immigrants in the US. I remember that pretty much everyone in the movie was represented by someone in our church.
