  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I personally dont listen to secular music any more. I try to find new songs to listen to but its kind of hard. I get 2 good christian music stations in my area. 1 I can hear around and near my house but the other I have to get out toward Charlotte to start hearing it. So to help in finding new songs to listen to; what are your favorite songs. My top 5 are.

1. Enough-Chris Tomlin
2. Not to us- Chris Tomlin
3. King of Glory- Third Day
4. Happy Song- Delirious
5. Amazing Love- Many artists but umm Delirous or Sonic Flood prolly

Personally, I am not a huge "Christian" music fan (though I don't label my music). Music that comes from labels that are primarly christian tend to be of a lesser quality than others.

Not only that, but I haven't found any reason why that "other music" would be considered bad.

But that is just me.

There are a lot of Christian radio stations that you can listen to on the computer:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=christian+radio

You can also download itunes and use their music store to listen to all kinds of Christian music artists, hear samples of their songs off various albums. You don't have to buy the music from itunes, but you could come up with a list of new bands you like. Then you can special order them at your local record store, if they do that. If you have a Family Christian store in your area, I know they do special orders for music but they make you pay up front. A lot of larger bookstores will order music for you, and I think they don't charge you up front. Or ask your parents to make an order for you off the internet? Maybe a birthday present if that's coming up.

I don't really listen to secular music - but that's because I'm a Christian Music Addict. I have been for years. I have a blog about it! http://www.blogofat.blogspot.com

I listen to more alternative - heavy type music.

If you have not found any reasons to consider that "other music" bad, perhaps you have not really looked that hard. Consider these words of Jesus:
Mat 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

Mat 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

What good things come out of the hearts of unregenerate songwriters?

I agree with the above!
Also is it you haven't found anything wrong with the other music because its the fact that you dont want to? I try to stay tentative to the words of God and be as he wishes me to be no matter what I have to drop ie. secular music. Lets take a look at a song by artist 50 cent who many american teens listen to on a daily basis.

"[Intro: 50 Cent]
Yeah...
Uh huh
So seductive

[Chorus: 50 Cent & Olivia]
[50 Cent]
I take you to the candy shop
I'll let you lick the lollypop
Go 'head girl, don't you stop
Keep going 'til you hit the spot (woah)
[Olivia]
I'll take you to the candy shop
Boy one taste of what I got
I'll have you spending all you got
Keep going 'til you hit the spot (woah)

[Verse 1: 50 Cent]
You can have it your way, how do you want it
You gon' back that thing up or should i push up on it
Temperature rising, okay lets go to the next level
Dance floor jam packed, hot as a teakettle
I'll break it down for you now, baby it's simple
If you be a nympho, I'll be a nympho
In the hotel or in the back of the rental
On the beach or in the park, it's whatever you into
Got the magic stick, I'm the love doctor
Have your friends teasin you 'bout how sprung I gotcha
Wanna show me how you work it baby, no problem
Get on top then get to bouncing round like a low rider
I'm a seasons vet when it come to this ****
After you broke up a sweat you can play with the stick
I'm tryin to explain baby the best way I can

[Chorus]

[Bridge: 50 Cent & Olivia]
Girl what we do (what we do)
And where we do (and where we do)
The things we do (things we do)
Are just between me and you (oh yeah)

[Verse 2: 50 Cent]
Give it to me baby, nice and slow
Climb on top, ride like you in the rodeo
You ain't never heard a sound like this before
Cause I ain't never put it down like this
Soon as I come through the door she get to pullin on my zipper
It's like it's a race who can get undressed quicker
Isn't it ironic how erotic it is to watch em in thongs
Had me thinking 'bout that ass after I'm gone
I touch the right spot at the right time
Lights on or lights off, she like it from behind
So seductive, you should see the way she wind
Her hips in slow-mo on the floor when we grind
As Long as she ain't stoppin, homie I aint stoppin
Drippin wet with sweat man its on and popping
All my champagne campaign, bottle after bottle its on
And we gon' sip til every bubble in every bottle is gone"

theres nothing there but sexual filth, cursing, consuming alcohol, etc. Honestly do you think this is helping your daily walk with God to be tentative to the spirt? I think not.

As for the other things being said I have plenty of access to the music I was just wondering everyone elses favorite songs.

Gotta love how the previous two posters assumed they knew what kind of music I was talking about... I NEVER mentioned rap music or any other type of music that I listen to. I actually listen to varying types.

But, le's do a "test"

follow me down to the laughing city
with people changing all their minds
it's crazy
i want this ma'am, that ma'am, no sir
yes ma'am, that sir
well i'll tell you one thing, if you're keeping something

then hold on, hold on to the ones you love
hold on, hold on to the ones you love

let's not fight, that is not nice (that is where you'll find me)
let's not be sore, that is not right (that is where you'll find me)

come home late, i know you're sick of working
you're feeling down because your head is hurting
so you don't talk
oh no no no no

you didn't hold on, hold on to the ones you love
hold on, hold on to the ones you love

let's not fight, that is not nice (that is where you'll find me)
let's not be sore, that is not right (that is where you'll find me)

let's not fight, that is not nice (that is where you'll find me)
let's not be sore, that is not right (that is where you'll find me)

Is this song 'Christian' or 'Secular' ?

What about the following one?
so let me get this straight
say now you loved me all along?
what made you hesitate
to tell me with words what you really feel
i can see it in your eyes you mean all of what you say
i remember so long ago, see i felt that same way
now we both have separate lives and lovers (and lovers)
insignificantly enough we both have significant others

only time will tell
time will turn and tell

we are who we were when
could've been lovers but at least you're still my day late friend
we are who
we are who we were when
who knew what we know now
could've been more but at least you're still my day late friend
we are who
we are who we were when

but thoughts they change and times they rearrange i don't know who you are anymore
loves come and go and this i know i'm not who you recall anymore
but i must confess you're so much more then i remember
can't help but entertain these thoughts
thoughts of us together

we are who we were when
could've been lovers but at least you're still my day late friend
we are who
we are who we were when
who knew what we know now
could've been more but at least you're still my day late friend
we are who
we are who we were when

my day late friend

so let me get this straight
all these years and you were no where to be found
and now you want me for your own
but you're a day late and my love, she's still renowned
we are who we were when
could've been lovers but at least you're still my day late friend
we are who
we are who we were when
who knew what we know now
could've been more but at least you're still my day late friend
we are who
we are who we were when

american teens

Also, be reminded...I am not an american teen. I am an american adult. :)

Why do I choose not to listen, exclusively, to "christian" music?

1) Look at the lyrics in my last post. In case you have never seen them... the first set is "Laughing City" by Eisley (a WB records artist, a "secular" label that toured with Coldplay last year). The second set is "A Day Late" by Anberlin, a tooth and nail artist (which is a "christian" label). Looking at the lyrics of the songs... I don't see any difference. Anberlin doesn't claim Jesus or His teachings anymore than Eisley does. (A point to make... the members of eisley, are personal friends of mine... all of them have passionate relationships with Christ). So, what seperates "christian" music from "secular?" We have rule out lyrics.... cause clearly you can see that not one word of Anberlin's song is singing about or to Jesus.

2) No where in the Bible does it say that I have to listen specifically to music that is glorifying to God, etc. The Bible provides us guidelines... and those guidelines do not restrict me from listening to music that is not "christian" in nature.

3) As I mentioned before, I never mentioned the type of music I listen to... I never stated bands, artists or even style, but I was jumped on by at least 2 posters because they assumed the worst.

AMEN! I agree 100%. I listen to KTIS the local CCM station a lot, and my CCM CDs, but I love classical, New Age, and Meditation music the best. It keeps me focused on Christ more than CCM. I praise God for your wisdom my sister in Christ! :amen:
