If the GST replaced existing taxes as promised, perhaps it would be worth filling out BAS statements. However, here in the West, despite billions of dollars due to windfalls, courtesy of the mining boom and the phenomenal increase in housing costs is finding it's way into our state (WA) coffers. Result? Huge Stamp Duty on housing, (read Tax under another name) failing essential services (today record ambulances were 'ramped' outside Perth emergency departments. That's shocking! This state (Labor) government has not recognised that increased population means increased infastructure. Instead they are closing country hospitals, nursing posts, minimising beds, minimising everything that costs them money, (OUR MONEY) and are then attempting to gag people in the know who want to talk about it with some authority. Shame! WA State Labor Party, Shame! If they continue to hide things that should be open to public debate, attempting to gag FOI regarding a report on the conditions in Aboriginal communities in the Kimberly, then something really stinks and the truth will never see the light of day and therefore will never be resolved and the victims will never see any improvements.

Mothy,

I think you might find a lot of the problem with hospitals (and this is happening right across the country, not just in WA) is a severe lack of nursing and medical staff. This is largely the fault of the previous Federal Government ripping the guts out of Higher Education funding for the past 11½ years. Even if States had double the health budget, they would be hard pressed finding staff to fill all the positions. Hence the increase in immigrants working in the healthcare sector, but even they only fill so many positions.

It will be interesting to see if the new Labor Government does anything to reverse this trend.

Yeah I think that that is pretty much the problem. In WA most companies and institutians cannot get anough staff under this boom. So people are pretty much stretched to the limit as far as the work they are doing, but there is just no-one to fill positions. It is especially hard to get teachers, nurses and police. It is always difficult to find people to do these jobs, but it is even harder when these people can go and earn double doing easier work.

The lack of forsight by our state governement is really going to come back and bite us on the bum once the boom is over.

...and why is this a good thing? The Democrats have done a lot for this country, and I think we need tem in the Senate to keep the balance of power. The Greens put up roadblocks, the Democrats negotiate. We need both in the Senate.

I just realised something...I live in the electorate of both the Prime Minister and the Premier of QLD. Lol...:p
Extraordinary!! Has this ever happened before? Ever? Make sure you take advantage of it - you are indeed lucky. Your electorate must now be the envy of everyone in Australia.

I thought it quite interesting that although both Howard and Rudd profess to be Christians, there was not one mention of God in either speech.

But anyway, we're happy Rudd got in. And very happy that David Bradbury got into our division (yes, we are in Lindsay). :p
Yes, kinda interesting.. But maybe they just plain forgot, or don't like to publicly acknowledge it.

It will be very hard to govern as promised for the labour party, because of some very 'simple' people. Even after June next year, and even with the help of the 5 green senators, both parties got 37 senat seats, with FF's only 1 seat holding the balance, and he got in with the liberals.
And on top of it the LP has to clean up the economical mess of the Libs (biggest trade deficit, economic grow to high and so on), and on top of it maybe a global recession, thanks to busch in america, it will have to take a lot of skill to handle this, like under Keating and then when all was right again, the Australian People failed Keating, we would be prety good today, because Keating had the big picture ahead of our future. Now we start the same circus again: the LP will fix the problems and Libs will take over doing upsolutly NOTHING! Proud to have billions surplus, but people are suffering.

Ah so you think everything the Labour party does is perfect? I don't think there is any perfect political party, we are all human and all make mistakes.

I do however think you are wrong and it is Liberal that fixes up Labour mistakes, but time will tell.

I also don't believe that the recession is Bush fault, I don't understand that thinking.
