Yes, an attack on the Papacy is an attack on Catholicism and Catholics, because Catholics believe that the Pope is the Vicar of Christ on earth. He holds an exalted position not heard of in Orthodoxy. And this was part of the reason we experienced the Great Schism of 1054 AD.
In Orthodoxy, we do not view the Patriarch as the Vicar of Christ, so we don't have the same mindset or ethos.
