  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Bear with me here as I try and explain this without sounding like an idiot LOL

So the bible says that if you have the faith the size of a mustard seed... all the things you can do.
And thats with FAITH the size of a mustard seed.

Now in COrinthians, it says that ...... that these three remain, faith, hope and love... but the greatest of these is LOVE.

Now if the greatest of these is love, and we have such little faith, and love is greater then faith, just immagine how much less our love is.

Does that make sence to anyone? Its just something Ive been thinking about. That is all

Well, if the greater of the three is love.. then love is greater than faith... so love is greater than a mustard seed... so our love is not less...

But anyway, you raise a good point! I don't understand this about the mustard seed either! It's in Matthew 17 if anyone wants to read the parable...

I guess what I meant to say was, the greatest of these is love, and if we are of such little faith, and our love is supposed to be greater then our faith... (although Love is greater then faith) our love must be very little... if we had faith the size of a mustardseed... we can move mountains... thats with faith the size of a mustardseed. MOVE MOUNTAINS... wow

But love is greater then faith, and our faith is so small... our love for one another must be much smaller.

Does that make sence? it makes sence in my brain :(

Nope, that doesn't make sense to me...

If love is greater than faith... and out faith is small... then our love for one another MUST be bigger because love is greater than faith...

(hello btw! Haven't bumped into you for a while!)

Well I'm not sure if this is it but what I'm hearing is...

If faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain, then love which is greater, can be even smaller than a mustard seed and move two mountains.

How's that? :)

hmmm:scratch: I think I see (but it's getting late so then again maybe not:) )

I've taken a look in my Bibles and they read faith as a mustard seed rather than the size of it.

Here's a site that tries to explain

http://christian-resurrection.org/jesus/mustard-seed.htm

Maybe it's those 2 words that make the difference.

It makes sense if one looks at it as love being kind of like concentrated dish detergent as compared to faith being regular dish detergent :D

I looked at that page about mustard seeds... It's not scientifically accurate - mustard seeds can be crossed and made into hybrids.

What makes love greater than faith is that nothing brings people to Christ more than love. A Christian moving mountains with his faith will impress non believers but manifesting a spirit of love is a more effective means of bringing others to Christ.
The apostles had great faith, but it was the spirit of love they had for others that won hearts over to Jesus.
No matter how great a persons faith is, if that person does not have a love for God and his fellow man he is not a disciple of Christ. Though he may possess great faith, and even have power to work miracles, without love his faith would be worthless.
It is Jesus' great love for the Father and for man that people find irresistable.

I think this post has definately come the closest to answering the question Sign of the Fish is asking. I still say it's not the size of the mustard seed that is being spoken of but the fact that the mustard seed is among the smallest of seeds, yet when planted and nurtured becomes a tree that can grow 12-15 feet and become so stong that birds can nest in it. It's very small in it's beginning yet great when it grows.

But what makes love greater? I agree with repentandbelieve. It is possible to have faith but not love. But love outlasts both faith and hope. There will come a day when we will be in His presence. Faith and hope will no longer be necessary. But love endures forever.

Thanks CeCe. I agree with the point you made about the size of the mustard seed. Although the mustard seed starts out very small, it grows into something much, much larger. As our faith grows, or develops, we become more and more capable of doing great things with it.

One other interesting thing about how great love is, not only does it endure forever as you mentioned but it also "covers a multitude of sin."
